I am writing this update with a mixture of pride and disappointment. For now, mostly disappointment. 🤷♂️ Disappointment as we did not bring home the DesignEuropa Award. The award went to Transparent founded by designer Per Brickstad. The jury awarded Transparent for their beautiful transparent turntable design, and the circular and sustainable material philosophy behind it. (Well done, Per!)🏆 Pride as we were one of three finalists - out of a whopping 800 applicants - of this prestigious award. EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office is ranked the first patent office in the world, so it means a lot for us ending up on that podium. That means our product ranks as one of the three best designs in the whole of Europa. So yes, we are proud. Maybe we should not forget MyGrid was founded only two years ago, so to be on a stage with the lead designers behind among others Bang & Olufsen or Noto Design, just priceless. 😎 Now back to developing ModuleOne, making sure our community will get the best plug-in battery possible. #design #energy #plugandplay #battery #technology

Today our office looks a little different. Hugo Niesing, CEO of our project partner Resourcefully hosted a joint demo moment on their home boat. This boat is a true renewable energy experiment! A little boat next to the ‘mother ship’ works as a battery to store excess solar power. In the evening the little boat discharges and feeds the main boat’s electricity needs. As simple as genius. Our partner has been involved in previous energy experiments: 90 households in his neighbourhood take part in energy optimisation programs to help remediate local grid congestion. These households receive notifications when congestion arises, and challenges and rewards them to avoid using too much power. ModuleOne, our plug and play home battery marks a new chapter: people will be sent notifications to discharge energy at the right time to help remediate grid congestion. In a later phase, this step will be automated. A home battery adds comfort on two levels: once automated, users can effortlessly help remediate grid congestion, and they do not have to adapt their energy usage. This summer, we were chosen by Alliander, one of the largest Dutch grid operators, to develop a proof of concept to help remediate grid congestion at neighborhood level in Amsterdam. Our initiative aims to explore how smart, plug-and-play home batteries can mitigate pressure on the power grid at neighborhood level. Our plug-in home batteries, which operate independently of solar panels*, now offer a solution for renters and apartment dwellers. By allowing us to engage these extra households, we can broaden our impact in addressing grid congestion. *The batteries charge from the grid via a standard outlet when electricity prices are low and discharge during peak pricing. The home batteries harness excess energy during periods of high production and release it when demand surges, thereby easing the grid's load. While our plug-in home battery technology is a key component, Alliander is also deploying other advanced grid technologies to manage congestion effectively. Open Ecosystems meets Open Source A standout feature of ModuleOne is its intelligent management system. In partnership with OpenRemote, an open-source platform for smart energy applications, we are developing an advanced energy management system to deploy batteries at optimal times. This open-source collaboration allows us to continuously refine and enhance our technology with other industry players and experts. Synergrid, the Belgian federation of electricity and gas grid operators, has adjusted the regulations for plug and play systems, finally defining the 'grey area'. Synergrid has been working on these regulatory changes since the beginning of the year. We were also part of the discussions, which were highly constructive. The expectation is that the new guidelines will be approved by the regional regulators, such as the VREG, in November. By May next year, Synergrid’s recommendations are expected to be enacted into law. This is excellent news for plug and play solar panels and home batteries. But what does the adjusted regulation mean for ModuleOne? For our plug and play home battery, not much will change. From the very first design, we prioritized safety and chose to adhere to the strictest standards. We were already compliant with Synergrid’s C10/11 regulations and the European directive CN RfG, which governs plug and play systems. Our decision to follow the highest safety standards is now being rewarded. We are particularly pleased with the clarity Synergrid is providing. We fully support their emphasis on safety as the number one priority. The timing is also perfect, as following the lead of the Netherlands and Germany, Belgium recently adopted plug and play solar panels, also known as 'balcony solar'. These plug-and-play solar panels are compact models that you can place on your balcony or terrace to generate solar energy. For tenants and households in apartments, these plug and play solar panels offer an opportunity to save on energy bills. When combined with a plug-in home battery, they can achieve even more savings. This summer, we saw several stores in Belgium offering plug and play solar panels for sale. You simply plug these panels into an outlet without the need for an electrician.
