How can freshwater RAS facilities mitigate the increasing threats from Water Molds (Oomycetes) related diseases? 🎯 Today, these organisms are difficult to detect because they have various lifestages that are difficult to sample, quantify and the data difficult to interpret. Both DNA and cultivation-based methods, which are bulk methods, tend to not accurately quantify the real pressure on the system. ⏱️On top of that, the methods are often too slow to serve operational decision making. 📈 KYTOS has developed predictive models that are capable of identifying the specific zoospore phenotype of Oomycetes at the single-cell level in aquatic environments. Currently our markers consist of putative #Saprolegnia, #Pythium, and #Pythophtora zoospores. But whats the advantage of measuring zoospores, you may ask? 🦠 Zoospores are the motile form of these disease-bearing organisms as they are spreading and colonizing the RAS. ⚠️Measuring the levels of zoospores to which the fish are exposed provides a quantitative and reproducible way of tracking health risks and optimizing treatment regimes.
