IDF proudly announces the winners of the "IDF Professor Pavel Jelen Early Career Scientist Prize” for 2024. This prestigious award recognizes the exceptional work of scientists and technologists in the dairy science and technology field, specifically targeting "early-career" individuals, including graduate and postgraduate students who have graduated within three years of their highest degree. Named in honor of Professor Pavel (Paul) Jelen, an esteemed Czech-born Canadian scientist and educator who dedicated his career to dairy science and technology research, as well as mentoring and educating young scientists and technologists, the Prize exemplifies the importance of open communication in the field. The 2024 winners are: First Prize: Maria Frizzarin (Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research Centre, Ireland) for her work on the use of mid-infrared spectroscopy to quantify the cow environmental footprint. Second Prize: Natalie Ahlborn (Sustainable Nutrition Initiative – Riddet Institute, New Zealand) for her work on processing treatments of milk and their effects on digestion and nutrient absorption. Equal Third Prize: Riccardo Cocuzzi (Agroscope and the University of Fribourg, Switzerland) for his work on lactate metabolism in Propionibacterium freudenreichii, an important microorganism in the manufacture of Swiss-type cheeses. Equal Third Prize: Mark Timlin (University College Dublin and Teagasc Food Research Centre, Ireland) for his work on the impacts of a ‘typical’ Irish pasture-based system on the composition and quality of milk and dairy products. The winners will be encouraged to attend the IDF World Dairy Summit 2024 to be held in Paris, France from 15 to 18 October 2024. There, they will have the opportunity to present their work as a poster and as a short oral presentation. Presenting their work at the World Dairy Summit will provide the awardees with an invaluable platform to showcase their research and expertise, fostering opportunities for further education, mentoring, and employment in the dairy sector. "We firmly believe that this prize will inspire and incentivize candidates to dedicate their careers to addressing dairy-related issues, empowering a new generation of scientists and technologists committed to advancing dairy science and technology. Through their efforts, we aim to enhance the quality, safety, and nutritional value of milk and dairy products," stated Dr. Geoffrey Smithers, a member of the IDF Standing Committees on Dairy Science and Technology and Nutrition and Health, and Chair of the Prize judging panel. IDF extends its gratitude to all the participants and extends heartfelt congratulations to the winners for their outstanding performance. "This was a busy but constructive week for IDF in Rome for the FAO-Leap, FAO COAG Subcommittee on Livestock and GASL meetings. Many speaking, exchanging and networking opportunities to keep the conversation on Livestock and Dairy’s irreplaceable role in nourishing a growing world population with safe, healthy, nutritious foods produced in increasingly sustainable ways, going, as well as its capacity to provide livelihoods for billions of people around the world. We also had the chance to discuss the impact of livestock and agriculture in the environment and its contributions to the soil’s health through ecosystem services and climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. We celebrated our long-lasting alliances with key stakeholders from the livestock, agriculture and dairy chain, from USDEC to Instituto Interamericano de Cooperación para la Agricultura (IICA), Global Dairy Platform Inc. (GDP), and International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), with which we recently signed an MOU. We also met with Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). As members of the Dairy Sustainability Framework (DSF) and Pathways To Dairy Zero, we also supported the presentation on its progress on methane emissions reduction. As IDF we are proud to be part of these working groups and alliances with international organisations, IGOs and NGOs that pursue common good through cooperation on the sustainable transformation of Food Systems all over the world", expressed IDF Director General, Laurence Rycken, #today.

    • With the Chair of LEAP, Peter Ettema, and the New Zealand representative, Jenny Reid.
    • Speaking at the LEAP Partnership session: "A 12-year success story", about a successful experience of collaboration within the global dairy sector: the case of the LCA methodology.
    • We had the chance to meet with Thanawat Tiensin, FAO Director of the Animal Production and Health Division (NSA), and the Leap Secretary.
    • With Shirley Tarawali, Assistant Director General of ILRI and chair of the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock, we celebated the MOU signed by ILRI and IDF.

#HappeningNow: IDF Director General, Laurence Rycken's opening words at the USDEC side event, "Building a Heathier Food System: Animal Agriculture and Soil Health Working Together", at the Second Session of the United Nations FAO's COAG Sub Committee on Livestock. "With the global challenge to continue to nourish a growing global population, the livestock sector has been at the centre of the conversation. It pleases me to see that conversations are evolving. The livestock sector has a responsibility to take. However, it also plays a variety of positive role in climate and environmental conditions. As we continue our journey to ensure that nobody is left behind, we need to consider all dimensions and evaluate the potential tradeoffs when focusing on one dimension over another. Looking at how livestock plays an important role in cycling nutrients, improving the aggregation and structure of soils, leading to healthier ecosystems. Taking us through this fascinating topic we have a great panel of speakers with a specific mention to our farmers, giving those who produce our foods and through their commitment and passion as stewards of the land, a place to take us to their reality." #WeAreDairy #ProudToBeDairy
