The electrification of Europe's industry, buildings, and transport must be a top EU policy priority for 2024–2029. ICA Europe fully supports the Electrification Alliance's call on the European Commission to urgently propose an Electrification Action Plan within the first 100 days of its mandate. There are about 8 billion electric motors in use in the EU, consuming nearly 50 per cent of the electricity generated in the EU. Their energy performance is key to achieve the savings targeted by the #EUGreenDeal. Fernando Nuño, Market Advocacy Manager at ICA Europe, outlines a vital role that #copper has in electric motors. Additional materials are often used in motors to make them more efficient, however this is more than compensated by the material savings in electricity generation assets. I go back to Brussels with a positive vibe from a short week at the European Parliament in #Strasbourg. As new and re-elected MEPs take some important decisions in their first #plenary, I was happy to pass on the key messages of the International Copper Association Europe at meetings as well as the dinner organized by the European Energy Forum! Our five calls are simple yet crucial: 1. Making the resilience and competitiveness of strategic net zero value chains a defining political priority.   2. A stable, coherent, and inviting regulatory environment to promote investments in strategic raw material value chains.   3. Streamlined permitting for mining, refining, and recycling in the EU, and stronger partnerships outside the EU.   4. Access to competitively priced, fossil-free energy in sufficient quantities.   5. Yesterday, Aurubis successfully wrapped up the largest maintenance shutdown in company history at its Hamburg site. 🏗️ With roughly 500 individual tasks and an around € 95 million budget for plant maintenance and technical upgrades, we made important investments in the Hamburg plant’s efficiency and environmental protection. 💬 “We executed all the shutdown tasks with the highest quality – a technical and logistical tour de force, given the extreme complexity of the shutdown,” Aurubis Chief Transformation Officer Prof. Dr. Markus Kramer said. 👷 Around 2,000 people were involved in the large-scale project including 1,500 workers from partner companies, suppliers and service providers. ♨️ Along with the comprehensive maintenance and renewal work, we also executed two strategic projects during the shutdown that further expand Aurubis’ pioneering role in sustainability: The installation of hydrogen-ready anode furnaces and the expansion of our carbon-free industrial heat project. 💬 “This strategic investment represents another milestone along our path towards carbon neutrality, and demonstrates at the Hamburg site that as an industry, we are an important part of the solution for accelerating decarbonization,” Aurubis CEO Roland Harings emphasized. Copper enables the technology needed for the green energy transition, which has the potential to abate two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.   International Copper Association Europe's Fernando Nuño spoke with Christina Iosifidou at Siemens Energy about the role copper plays in global electrification and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “The electricity sector has never been more in need of understanding how emissions build over the value chain.
