#H2Highlights: At the beginning of 2024 we launched our #H2MobilitySurvey results! Have a look at our members’ expectations on key future #zeroemission transport technologies and what role they see for #cleanhydrogen solutions. In the survey, they’ve been asked which #technology could best fit each #transport mode, and what challenges they see for hydrogen #mobility to materialise. Here are some of the main findings of the "Long-term outlook on zero-emission mobility" survey: 🚢 ✈🚚 Hydrogen solutions have a significant potential to decarbonise HDV (buses and trucks), and to contribute to reduce emissions in #maritime and #aviation sector. ⛽Dense refuelling #infrastructure planning is needed for widespread deployment of these hydrogen solutions. 💲Challenges identified are the cost of these zero-emission technologies and fuel prices, but long-term savings justify the #investment. This highlights the need for a supportive environment through #regulation and #funding opportunities provided for by the public sector. Read the full document here ➡ https://lnkd.in/eqdX4diH

Valuable insights from #H2EQuarterly’s #Regional Member Spotlight! 🇮🇹 G. Claudia R. Romano, Director and Head of Energy and Green Economy Area of the Italian region Regione Emilia-Romagna, highlights #hydrogen opportunities and the roadmap to get there. ⛰️At the end of last year, the Modena #HydrogenValley, a project led by Snam S.p.A. and Bologna-based utility Gruppo Hera, was launched. It involves the construction of two solar farms – one ground-mounted and one floating - and a 2.5MW #electrolyser with the capacity to produce around 400 tonnes of #renewablehydrogen per year. Local transport companies TPER SPA and SETA are set to use this hydrogen to decarbonize their fleets. Romano is committed to preparing the region for future projects, ensuring efficient and responsible use of resources to expand its hydrogen capacity. “We are using the hydrogen valley as a pioneer to launch other private initiatives, and we are looking at lots of them,” says Romano. The success of the Comune di Modena Hydrogen Valley, a brownfield project located in a disused landfill, provides good lessons for future projects because, as she explains, “being a very dense region with lots of infrastructure and inhabitants, we don’t have much available surface to place PV and wind farms”. 🔗Check out further insights into the region’s ambitions for hydrogen development by reading the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eV9fy39S

#H2Europe congratulates Ursula von der Leyen on her re-election as President of the European Commission. We are happy to see that many points that we recently communicated to her (click here for more info 👉 https://lnkd.in/egTYXkfd) are being integrated in the political guidelines for the next Commission. It is encouraging to see that the core of the next mandate revolves around high climate ambitions with a clear framework for EU #netzero industrial investments that will help derisking business decisions needed to deliver #climateneutrality by 2050. 🌿 #Climate The new Commission will put forward new 2040 climate targets, a Clean Industrial Deal, the Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act and will focus on prioritising and scaling up #investment in #cleanenergy infrastructure and technologies. This will be fundamental for the development and deployment of European #hydrogentechnology, #infrastructure and #storage capacity to provide the necessary flexibility to our #renewables and help decarbonise energy and industrial sectors that are still reliant on fossil fuels. 💧 #Competitiveness It is encouraging to see the commitment to an investment Commission with a focus on competitiveness as well as the proposed risk absorbing measures such as the EU Competitiveness Fund in the next Multiannual financial framework (#MFF). The willingness to make Important Projects of Common European Interest (#IPCEIs) simpler and faster to get financing off the ground are encouraging signals for #cleantechnologies such as hydrogen. Additionally, preference will also be given to European products in public procurement for certain strategic sectors can help boost such domestic technologies. 🌍 #Internationaldimension Clean trade and investment partnerships will be crucial to keep the EU a leader in international negotiations. To this end, putting hydrogen at the centre of the EU #climatediplomacy and the #GlobalGateway investments will help in delivering the global climate and energy vision ahead of #COP30. Last but not least, it is promising that each Commissioner will be tasked with focusing on reducing administrative burdens and simplifying implementation, include accelerating permitting and cutting out red tape that can unleash the full potential of European clean technologies. The hydrogen sector stands ready to work with the next Commission to turn the plan for Europe’s sustainable prosperity and competitiveness into reality. The Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) on #hydrogen have set a precedent with their significant public and private collaboration, mobilizing more resources than any other #IPCEI. 📅 On the 28th of May 2024, the European Commission officially notified the fourth and final "wave" of the hydrogen IPCEI. Hydrogen Europe strongly supported the idea for a hydrogen IPCEI as early as 2018, advocating for hydrogen’s potential in decarbonization and the necessity of a #HydrogenStrategy as a main pillar of the #EUGreenDeal. The Hydrogen IPCEI represented one of the most ambitious initiatives for the sector to date, aimed at establishing the foundation of a first-of-its-kind European #hydrogenecosystem through a collaborative effort between Member States and private players. The Hydrogen IPCEI has included: 🚍 First wave: joint support for #electrolysers and #fuelcells to produce #renewablehydrogen and power vehicles 🏭Second wave: support for industrial applications 🔨Third wave: building hydrogen infrastructure such as pipelines and long-term storage facilities 💶Fourth wave: funding for hydrogen mobility applications As this five-year journey comes to an end, in our latest issue of the #H2EQuarterly, we reflect on the achievements as well as recognise and address the challenges that this initiative generated. 🔗 To learn more, read the full article https://lnkd.in/eV9fy39S

⚖️ #H2Europe concurs with the conclusions of a report published today by the European Court of Auditors which criticises the complexity and length of implementation of European #hydrogen legislation. The ECA report acknowledges that the legal framework for #climateprotection was adopted quickly and robustly. However, the accompanying measures, in particular the delegated act for the definition of #renewablehydrogen, has taken too long and is overly complex, deferring important investments into the sector. In addition, the approval process for the #IPCEIs is far too lengthy to achieve the desired effect. Lastly, the implementation of existing regulations must be significantly accelerated. Hydrogen Europe encourages the European Commission to take note of the report’s conclusions and update its targets as well as accelerate the implementation of the EU #hydrogenmarket with a more cohesive approach. To achieve this, the Commission should take more ownership on guiding members states on their #hydrogen strategies as part of their National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs), and it should also better reflect national priorities when setting EU policy strategies. While some member states want to develop #lowcarbon hydrogen, the Commission appears stubbornly against creating a framework that will boost its use. There is a real risk that the Low Carbon Hydrogen Delegated Act takes as long to finalise, and is as excessively complex, as the Delegated Act before it. “The revision of the Delegated Act’s effect on global markets cannot wait until the foreseen date in 2028. We would lose precious time and our competitive advantages as EU. The new Climate Commissioner should make this a priority to rectify immediately,” said Jorgo Chatzimarkakis. Hydrogen Europe supports the ECA calls on the Commission to revisit their overall #hydrogenstrategy, detailing the role expected from imports as well as the role hydrogen can play in cross-sectoral renewable integration and #decarbonisation.
