About us

The House of European History is a forum for learning, reflection and debate, open to audiences from all generations and backgrounds. Our primary mission is to enhance understanding of European history in all its complexity, to encourage the exchange of ideas and to question assumptions. The House presents Europe's history in a way that raises awareness about the multiplicity of perspectives and interpretations. It preserves shared and dividing memories. It exhibits and collects the history of European integration and its foundations. A project of the European Parliament and part of its visitor offer, the House of European History is academically independent. Our transnational collection, our exhibitions and our programmes provide unexpected and inspiring experiences. Through outreach and partnerships, we aim to strengthen the European dimension in debating, exhibiting and learning about history. A place for encounters and exchange, the House's multi-faceted interpretation of the past builds bridges to questions relevant for today's Europe. Visit our website to book a visit, and subscribe to our newsletter to stay up-to-date on our events and live lectures with prominent academics from around the world.

  • 📽Special film screenings at the House of European History! As part of the temporary exhibition, “Bellum et Artes – Europe and the Thirty Years’ War”, we proudly present three extraordinary and very different European films that represent and (re)imagine the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648).  🎟️ The first film screening will take place on November 13 with ''A Jester’s Tale'' - an anti-war, black comedy, set during the Thirty Years’ War. The film director and animator Karel Zeman (1910-1989), often called the Czech Georges Méliès, combines live action with animation, inspired by the artistic work and style of the Swiss-born, German engraver Matthäus Merian, who lived during the Thirty Years’ War. 💬 Before the screening, join us at 18.15 for a 45 minute guided tour of the Bellum et Artes temporary exhibition, assessing the Thirty Years' War through the lens of different kinds of art. At 19.00, the film will be introduced in English by film curator Wouter Hessels and will be followed by a Q&A and discussion. ✔Entrance to the screenings is free ⚔Registration in advance is mandatory 💡Book your space here https://bit.ly/3Ujoy9b The House of European History Rue Belliard 135 Brussels 1040 #Film #History #Museum #Free #Brussels

⏮History plays an important role in our lives and Europeans engage with the past in highly diverse ways – from re-enactments, to commemorating historical events to tourist selfies and private collections. 📸The museum's next temporary exhibition 'Presence of the Past. A European Album' will showcase 21 photography projects from all over Europe so visitors can discover the many ways in which we connect with the past in our daily lives. 👋And as part of this exhibition project, the team has invited students from La Cambre - École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels to come and challenge the exhibition's narrative with their own work, which will also be on display. Many thanks to all the participants and their teachers - we're looking forward to their valuable contributions! Presence of the Past.
