New project, new start, new ideas. The combination between seaweed and technology does not seem evident. Not for us. In the I3-4-SEAWEED project, HAEDES will develop digital solutions for offshore aquaculture providing real time access to crucial met-ocean indicators, parameters that allow to assess the farm health status while facilitating planning of activities and operations. Last week we actively participated in the Kick-off of the I3-4-SEAWEED project, hosted by the Universidade de Coimbra. Together with 16 partners, we are committed to unfolding solutions to support the developments of the EU seaweed sector. Connecting people, ideas and solutions is what drives us. I3-4-SEAWEED offers the potential to cultivate this in an environment where creativity and imagination is valued. Together with the partners we will start assessing the seaweed farmers’ needs to initiate the development of a tailor-made tool. 📻 Stay tuned to engage with us in these developments! Nature is a source of inspiration and harmony for us at HAEDES. Connection with Nature is key: in our solutions and in the way we are enabling our services. Therefore we foster nature based solutions that result in: -        A developmental potential towards resilience and regeneration -        A contribution to increase bio-diversity -        A potential for health and well-being of communities. The Aquabreak project, which ended in April 2024, is a good example on how we co-create nature based solutions. The project enabled us to expand our understanding and believe in the capacity of a floating breakwater build with seaweed as element of our lives at coastal areas. We went from concept proved by numerical modelling towards scale-test and physical modelling. We were able to unfold how Aquabreak and see how it can allow the bio-cultural-spatial uniqueness of coastal areas to develop under ever changing dynamic conditions. The Aquabreak project challenged our nature based solution engineering skills and strengthen our met-ocean, fluid-structure, structural and physical modelling expertise. But also showed us how we can work with our essence, i.e. combining engineering & soul. We are grateful for the partners ICS FEUP, University of Stavanger and for the EEA and Norway Grants. The results of the project enable us to evolve towards in-situ pilot projects and further pioneer in developing nature based solutions as elements of regenerative designs. #naturebasedsolutions #CFD #coastalengineering #aquaculture

New project alert! 🚨 This summer HAEDES embarked on an exciting mission commissioned by the Agència Catalana de l'Aigua to explore the solutions for mobilizing sediment trapped in the irrigation channels of the Ebro Delta, Spain. Covering 320 km², the Ebro Delta is one of the largest wetlands on the Iberian Peninsula. It's also one of Europe’s most unique and vital ecosystems, balancing human habitation, extensive rice agriculture, and a birding hotspot. However, this delicate balance is under threat due to climate change and a significant reduction in sediment caused by extensive upstream damming of the Ebro River. In collaboration with Flumen Institute, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and GEOTOPSA, SL, we will: - Dive deep into the dynamics of sediment transport, - Quantify the sediment volumes retained within the channels, - Explore management approaches for rerouting this sediment. This research is crucial for ricefarmers relying on these irrigation systems. That's why our team members Josep Coma Romera, Ivan Rocabado, and Renaat De Sutter are allready working closely with the Comunitats de Regants del Delta de l'Ebre to understand the challenges, gather insights on irrigation management, and explore potential solutions. Projects like this go to the Soul of HAEDES: leveraging our technical expertise to foster sustainable and innovative solutions, ensuring the preservation of critical ecosystems in collaboration with local stakeholders.   #DeltaDelEbre #EbroRiver #SedimentTransport #NextGenerationEU #ClimateChange #LandSubsidence #AgriculturalSustainability

The understanding of our natural world was once again shaken. There is oxygen production in the deep sea, in total darkness and not by photosynthesis, by polymetallic nodules.   The nodules known as "battery rocks" are posed to support the green energy revolution, and the leading motivation for deep-sea mining. The find of this “dark oxygen” raises questions on the economic exploitation of such intriguing ecosystems and even how life began on Earth - what a majestic planet we live on! Nature often startles humanity, challenging our understanding, inspiring our endeavours, and making us rewrite history: what is yet to be discovered? It also emerges the question if human beings will ever be smart enough to understand nature and whether this understanding is needed to create conditions conducive to life? What if we embrace the fact that the web of life creates conditions conducive to life?   At HAEDES, the news of an oxygen production in the abyssal darkness, literally as far away as you can get from the standards we had set in terms of the production of oxygen, emphasize the importance of holism, an open mindset and systemic approaches to life, engineering, businesses and strengthen our journey towards regenerative development and design.   Scientific paper here: https://lnkd.in/gy5tzt75 #nature #regenerativedevelopment #earth

People frequently inquire about the essence of Regenerative Thinking and Regenerative Development. However, offering a direct answer proves challenging, as it transcends a singular framework, belief, or definition. It is not a concept easily encapsulated by mere reading and intellectual comprehension. Regenerative Thinking is an experiential journey that defies straightforward understanding and needs time to grow-up in ourselves. This is something Leen Gorissen, Lénia D. Rato, Karla Akemy B. and pIEt Haerens experienced when they were developing the report “Regenerative development and design – Its origins, essence, practice and potential as a meta-discipline to elevate governance, innovation and planetary health”, now published. See: https://lnkd.in/gayCPBVq. In this report, we illustrate that regenerative development has been practiced and evolved through the discipline of regenerative development and design with roots going back 50 years and more, and that its uniqueness lies in the fact that it is not about sustaining what is or restoring what was. Rather, it is about creating thriving living systems that have the capacity to evolve toward increasing states of health, vitality and abundance over time. This work has been a collaborative endeavor, characterized by the inevitable struggles and tensions, but also pleasant moments and fulfillment. We are enormously grateful for the support we have received from people in places all around the world. We give thanks to the many knowledge lineages we have drawn from, kept alive and evolving by Indigenous wisdom keepers and scientists; to the forward-thinking researchers and practitioners of modern Western science on whose shoulders we stand; to our resources Pamela Mang and Ben Haggard for challenging and uplifting our thinking; to the BeBiodiversity team for swift communication and flexibility and giving us the opportunity to dig into the subject. Seeds are planted, thanks to the dedication of the team and the perseverance of Stephanie Langerock. It is now up to all of us to create the condition that allow regenerative development and design to develop and flourish. #regenerativedevelopment #collaboration #nature #regenerativeleadership

HAEDES is a living system ever changing and responsive, relational and interconnected, synergethic and diverse. Realising our essence, developing engineering soul, is why we do what we do. We learn, unlearn and relearn how to generate and maintain a field of reciprocal nourishment with whom we interact. Like a wolfpack we depend on one another. We form a multidirectional web of connections the reinforcers itself and the people interacting in it. When people join or leave the dynamics change. Last months Leticia Weber Oliveira, Karla Akemy B. and Raylton Bendô physically left our living system, but will remain connected. This comes with many emotions like tension, fear, sadness, worry, but also excitement, gratitude, appreciation and nostalgia. Changes, tensions and friction are not necessarily negative. We constantly adapt. We create the collective conditions that provide the needed resources and conditions for ongoing development in each of us and as a company. That’s certainly challenging and that’s OK. Thank you Leticia Weber Oliveira, Karla Akemy B. and Raylton Bendô for your unique contribution shaping the Engineering Soul. We look forward to seeing how you will further unfold your full potential and discover your role. Our paths will cross, while HAEDES further evolves from institution-centred towards eco-system centred relationships.   #livingsystem #everchangingdynamics #regenerativeleadership #wolfpack
