From 9 TWh to 45 TWh: Urgent policy intervention is needed for #UndergroundHydrogenStorage (UHS) to Achieve EU climate goals! Read the full article on Euractiv 👉 https://lnkd.in/gz2G2uSB A recent study by Artelys and Frontier Economics, published in April 2024, revealed that achieving the 2030 ambitions set by REPowerEU cost-effectively will require a significant increase in UHS capacity, reaching 45 TWh. Key Insights: 🔹 Holistic EU System Planning: An integrated approach is crucial to unlock the full potential of the synergies between molecules and electrons, enabling a cohesive energy strategy. 🔹 Capacity Needs: Europe's underground hydrogen storage capacity needs to reach 45 TWh by 2030 to meet REPowerEU targets, a substantial increase from the 9 TWh currently planned. 🔹 Economic Benefits: Investing in and delivering this additional UHS capacity would yield a significant net economic benefit of €2.5 billion per year, totaling over €30 billion across 20 years. 🔹 Policy Support: Policymakers must create favorable conditions for the market to deliver necessary investments and provide EU support to overcome initial barriers in the nascent hydrogen market. #Flexibility and #Efficiency in the #EnergySystem: 🔺 UHS plays a pivotal role in providing flexibility in an energy system increasingly powered by variable renewable electricity. 🔺 The hydrogen sector, particularly UHS, offers a complementary strategy to electrification and helping industrial stakeholders achieve decarbonization and energy autonomy. Strategic Recommendations: ✅ Develop a dedicated EU hydrogen storage strategy immediately, avoiding silo-thinking and promoting interconnected systems. ✅ Build on synergies across sectors, including molecules and electrons, to ensure a competitive, resilient, and climate-neutral economy in Europe. ✅ De-risk vital investment for expanding the UHS industry at the EU level. Join the Conversation: We invite you to join us at the GIE Annual Conference on 17-18 October in Munich, Germany, to further discuss this key policy topic with over 300 energy experts. 🔰https://lnkd.in/ebJm8VMf Charlotte Roule 夏澜 Doug Waters Christopher Andrey Catherine Galano (L’Hostis) #RenewableEnergy #HydrogenStorage #EnergyTransition #EU2030 #SustainableFuture #GIEAC24

New GIE EBA Map available! ‘’#Biomethane is a today solution to cost-effectively support supply security and decarbonisation. It is green, produced in Europe and it is fit for today’s gas infrastructure.’’ Commented Pierre Duvieusart, GIE's Biomethane Area Sponsor. The map 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQrfNjfA About the event: On July 5, GIE joined EBA's webinar showcasing the figures of the biomethane scale-up. Experts presented policy levers and the new map of the plants and investments across Europe. The highlights: ✅ Europe has reached an installed capacity of 6.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) of biomethane per year ✅ 81% of the capacity corresponds to plants located in the European Union (5.2 bcm) ✅ The EU-27 countries’ growth has reached 37% ✅ The capacity of the non-EU countries analysed grew by 20% compared to the 2022-2023 dataset. Biomethane & #GasInfrastructure is a cost-effective & sustainable match: ✅ Supporting competitiveness: Avoiding stranded assets & minimising costs ✅ Supporting end-users with minimal adaptation requirements ✅ Safeguarding competitive gas prices and a steady energy supply ✅ Boosting the decarbonisation of multiple sectors incl. industries, heating, transport, data centres and electricity. To enable biomethane's growth: 1⃣ Equivalent support for green molecules and green electrons: Europe must build on Gas and Electricity synergies for a fast and sustainable transition. 2⃣ EU-wide approach to certification in transport to facilitate cross-border activities. 3⃣ Recognition with the EU ETS of renewable gases is necessary to encourage thermal electricity plants and industries to migrate to renewable solutions. 4⃣ Accessing feedstock needs to be addressed, whereby it should be urged towards AD plants to increase production. 5⃣ Green gas potential should be increased by supporting new biomethane production technologies at the industrial level 6⃣ Reducing permitting time 7⃣ Connection policies should not be punitive and should recognise externalities and the direct economic benefits of renewable gas. 8⃣ Keep efforts in raising awareness of biomethane benefits towards society and end-users. A warm thank you to Biljana Kulisic, European Commission | Annette Kroll, ENGIE | Mieke Decorte, Anastasiya Agapova, and Harmen Dekker from the European Biogas Association for contributing their impactful insights on this critical topic.
