📜PLA does not create persistent microplastics in the environment   A recent meta-study commissioned by Holland Bioplastics and conducted by HYDRA Marine Sciences provides valuable insights into the environmental impact of polylactic acid (PLA).   Here’s a summary of the key study’s findings: ➡️ Unlike non-biodegradable fossil-based polymers, PLA undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of water or humidity. ➡️ Hydrolysis breaks down PLA into ever-smaller molecules, making it soluble in water. ➡️ As long as moisture or humidity persists, PLA objects or fragments decrease in size via hydrolysis into oligomers and monomers (lactic acid). ➡️ Ultimately, PLA, oligomers and monomers become fully biodegraded, leaving no persistent nano- or micro-plastics in the environment.   Here's a quick breakdown of the process: 𝟭. In the presence of water, PLA undergoes hydrolysis. 𝟮. This pure chemical process of polymer degradation produces low molecular weight intermediates 𝟯. These intermediates are PLA oligomers and lactic acid monomers. 𝟰. These intermediates become soluble and can be biodegraded. 𝟱. Microorganisms take up these oligomers and monomers as sources of carbon. 𝟲. They are used as energy and to build up biomass by the microorganisms. 𝟳. Ultimately, this leads to the mineralization of the original polymer carbon into biomass, carbon dioxide, methane, and water.   Find the press release here: https://lnkd.in/dhsb7AA3   ⚠️ Littering is never the right option for the products we use every day no matter what they are made from. Biobased materials like PLA should always be disposed of within the appropriate waste collection infrastructure. In any case, this research underscores PLA’s role in creating sustainable, eco-friendly materials that contribute to reducing the long-term environmental impact of plastics.   Choosing PLA can indeed lead us toward a greener future! 🌱🌎

📢 Groundbreaking News for the PLA industry! We are excited to announce the results of a pioneering meta-study conducted by Hydra Marine Sciences and commissionned by Holland Bioplastics. The study reveals that Polylactic Acid (PLA), will fully hydrolyze in the presence of water or humidity. This process ensure no persistent nano- or micro-plastics remain or accumulate in the environment, provided there is water or humidity. Beside the fact that PLA have a lower CO2-footprint than traditional non-biodegradable plastics, these results represents a monumental advancement in our understanding of its long-term environmental impact. When compared to non-biodegradable plastics, which persist and accumulate in the environment, PLA's ability to prevent the formation of persistant pollution in the environment would represent a promising future for our planet.
