EHI - Association of the European Heating Industry
Renewable Energy Semiconductor Manufacturing
About us
The Association of the European Heating Industry (EHI) represents and promotes the common interests of 39 market leaders producing thermal comfort equipment (such as heating systems, burners, boilers, heat pumps, micro CHP, components, radiators and renewable energy systems) and 14 national industrial associations from the EU Member States, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Today, EHI represents 90% of the European market for heat and hot water generation, heating controls and heat emitters, as well as 75% of the hydronic heat pump market. Our Members produce advanced technologies for heating in buildings, including surface heating and cooling. In doing so, we employ directly more than 120.000 people in Europe and invest more than half a billion euro a year in energy efficiency. EHI was founded on 11 June 2002. It is the result of the merger of the former CEB (European Burner Committee), EBA (European Boiler Association), and AFECI (Association of European manufacturers of instantaneous gas water heaters and wall-hung boilers), whose history goes back into the 1960s. EHI’s mission: * To represent its members’ interests towards European, national and worldwide bodies relevant to the industry * To position EHI as key player to EU regulators, by advocating for a robust and workable legislative framework for the European heating industry * To encourage the exchange of information and experience amongst its members, as well as co-operation with associations in similar fields * To contribute to meeting the ambitious EU energy and climate goals, based on energy efficiency, sustainability, affordability and security. * To promote efficient & environmentally friendly heating and hot water systems

📣Industry insights reveal that consumers are more inclined to plan the replacement of their heating systems when they are aware of their inefficiency or age. 📶By introducing efficiency labels for installed appliances, consumers can be informed about the conditions of their appliances and motivated plan for replacements, paving the way for the deployment of more efficient and sustainable heating solutions. 🔧Regular inspections of old heating systems are more than just a safety measure: they're an important tool for increasing consumer awareness about new and more efficient solutions through engagement with local installers and technicians. 🌱By making these inspections mandatory, we ensure every system not only runs safely but is also efficiently substituted when needed, favoring the deployment of technologies such as heat pumps. 📢 𝐄𝐇𝐈 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐋𝐘 2024! This year our annual flagship event took place in Warsaw and gathered the main stakeholders in the European heating industry and Polish policymakers to discuss heating market trends across Europe, the latest legislative updates at EU & national levels, and the priorities for the sector in the next months. Here are our key takeaways👇 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: high energy prices, especially for electricity, and ever-changing frameworks of financial incentives for consumers are the main factors that led to a significant decrease in heat pump sales across Europe in the last months. This poses a critical challenge to heat pump deployment to the levels agreed by the EU. To improve, we require new strategies at the EU level and a stable incentives framework at the national level; 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐝𝐨: anchor the ambition of REPowerEU targets for efficient heating systems to legislation and maintain the ambition while supporting its implementation by working on what impacts the market - energy taxation, flexible tariffs rewarding consumer investments, resilience of electricity grids - rather than on bans. Consumers need a sound business case to invest in an efficient heating system: lower energy bills; 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: to keep a thriving European industry that can drive the decarbonisation of the building sector and the EU economy, policymakers need to send a clear signal that competitiveness of European industry is a priority and to focus on ensuring a level playing field with non-EU manufacturers with a set of EU rules that passes the international competitiveness-test; 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥: for sustainable and affordable decarbonisation of the building sector it is key to keep a multi-technology approach. Different technologies using different renewable energy vectors will provide a more suitable and cheaper decarbonisation scenario in 2030-2050 than an electrification-only scenario, as shown in the Guidehouse study. Huge thank you to EHI member SPIUG and its director Janusz Staroscik for the support and the insightful deep dive into the Polish heating market. Credits to all the speakers from our members’ companies and the Polish Government representatives – Paweł Biśta, Head of East Europe Northern Countries, Ariston Group; Sebastian Walerysiak, CEO/Vice President Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Viessmann; Krzysztof Ciemiega, Regional Director, Bosch Home Comfort Group; Andrzej Kaźmierski, Director of Department of Low Carbon Economy, Ministry of Development and Technology; Grzegorz Tobolczyk, Director of Department Heating and Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Climate and Environment – for the insights on the trends in the heating market and the expected impacts of the European Green Deal on Polish market. Thank you to all the participants for joining us and contributing to this meaningful discussion!

The decarbonisation of the buildings sector through the electrification of heating and the deployment of more efficient heating technologies - such as heat pumps - comes with both challenges and opportunities. The integration of these technologies will, and is already, rapidly transforming the energy landscape. We discussed it today with the European Commission, the distribution system operators, and the demand response sector. To ensure a smooth and effective transition, there needs to be continuous cooperation between the different players in the energy sector, including the heating industry, grid operators, and policymakers. This is crucial now more than ever, because no single sector can face grid congestions arising from the expected increased demand of electricity for electromobility and electric heating by itself. This was at the centre of our session “When challenge meets opportunity: heat pumps and electricity grids” at the 2024 EU Sustainable Energy Week #EUSEW2024. Thank you to our great speakers Dieter Kehren, Head of Smart Heating, Bundesverband der Deutschen Heizungsindustrie e.V. (BDH); Giuseppe Lorubio, Public & Regulatory Affairs Director, Ariston Group; Marion Malafosse, Head of Policy, smartEn Smart Energy Europe, Tzeni Varfi, Deputy Secretary General, E.DSO; Elaine O'Connell, Policy Officer, Unit C.3 Internal Energy Market, DG ENER, European Commission; Andreas Schlesier, Expert Energy and Grids, EU DSO Entity / Stadtwerke München GmbH for joining us and our Secretary General Federica Sabbati for this insightful discussion! 🌍🌱The decarbonization of the building sector cannot be achieved without key technologies, such as heat pumps. To support their deployment, the need for a competent and trained workforce is more critical than ever. Here’s how we can support the development of the required professions: 🔧 Small-sized installers should participate in re-training courses. 💸 Financial support needs to be provided to manufacturers to increase their training capacity. 🌐 City twinning energy programmes in non-EU partner countries should be established, incorporating training for installers, to draw more people to the profession. 👦👧 To engage with young people, there need to be Young Installers Programmes setting up informational campaigns across the EU and nationally, as well as updating public education curricula. Thank you Federico de Stefani for sharing your perspective!
