📢 𝐄𝐇𝐈 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐌𝐁𝐋𝐘 2024! This year our annual flagship event took place in Warsaw and gathered the main stakeholders in the European heating industry and Polish policymakers to discuss heating market trends across Europe, the latest legislative updates at EU & national levels, and the priorities for the sector in the next months. Here are our key takeaways👇 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬: high energy prices, especially for electricity, and ever-changing frameworks of financial incentives for consumers are the main factors that led to a significant decrease in heat pump sales across Europe in the last months. This poses a critical challenge to heat pump deployment to the levels agreed by the EU. To improve, we require new strategies at the EU level and a stable incentives framework at the national level; 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐝𝐨: anchor the ambition of REPowerEU targets for efficient heating systems to legislation and maintain the ambition while supporting its implementation by working on what impacts the market - energy taxation, flexible tariffs rewarding consumer investments, resilience of electricity grids - rather than on bans. Consumers need a sound business case to invest in an efficient heating system: lower energy bills;  𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: to keep a thriving European industry that can drive the decarbonisation of the building sector and the EU economy, policymakers need to send a clear signal that competitiveness of European industry is a priority and to focus on ensuring a level playing field with non-EU manufacturers with a set of EU rules that passes the international competitiveness-test;  𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥: for sustainable and affordable decarbonisation of the building sector it is key to keep a multi-technology approach. Different technologies using different renewable energy vectors will provide a more suitable and cheaper decarbonisation scenario in 2030-2050 than an electrification-only scenario, as shown in the Guidehouse study. The decarbonisation of the buildings sector through the electrification of heating and the deployment of more efficient heating technologies - such as heat pumps - comes with both challenges and opportunities. The integration of these technologies will, and is already, rapidly transforming the energy landscape. We discussed it today with the European Commission, the distribution system operators, and the demand response sector. To ensure a smooth and effective transition, there needs to be continuous cooperation between the different players in the energy sector, including the heating industry, grid operators, and policymakers. This is crucial now more than ever, because no single sector can face grid congestions arising from the expected increased demand of electricity for electromobility and electric heating by itself.   This was at the centre of our session “When challenge meets opportunity: heat pumps and electricity grids” at the 2024 EU Sustainable Energy Week #EUSEW2024. 🌍🌱The decarbonization of the building sector cannot be achieved without key technologies, such as heat pumps. To support their deployment, the need for a competent and trained workforce is more critical than ever. Here’s how we can support the development of the required professions: 🔧 Small-sized installers should participate in re-training courses. 💸 Financial support needs to be provided to manufacturers to increase their training capacity. 🌐 City twinning energy programmes in non-EU partner countries should be established, incorporating training for installers, to draw more people to the profession. 👦👧 To engage with young people, there need to be Young Installers Programmes setting up informational campaigns across the EU and nationally, as well as updating public education curricula.
