🔴Breaking news! EU delayed bans on dangerous chemicals. European Ombudsman finds maladministration in European Commission's persistent non-compliance with legal deadlines concerning decisions on dangerous chemicals. ⏰️Systematic delays means that highly hazardous chemicals continue to be used without controls, threatening health, recycling streams and the environment. On average, the European Commission takes 14.5 months to decide about banned chemicals, almost five times the legal limit. The Ombudsman recommendation should be addressed by the new Commission and put an end to its culture of inaction: ✅ Faster controls of chemicals ✅ Clearer deadlines ✅ Simplified hazard identification and control ✅ Preventing chemical pollution rather than repressing it ✅ Apply the precautionary principle (found in EU chemicals legislation) ✅ More competences for regulators and victims to make polluters pay 🧭EEB report ‘Need for speed on chemical protections in Europe’ was the first to raise the alarm about the Commission's delays and one of the triggers for the Ombudsman's enquiry. The report revealed that it takes no more than three weeks to authorise little-known chemicals to go on the market, but a decade to understand their hazards and another decade to ban or restrict those considered dangerous. This unacceptable behaviour undermines the rule of law and citizens' trust in EU institutions. The European Commission must put the public interest before toxic companies profits. #ToxicFreeFuture 📰 https://lnkd.in/eQeztapz

"While some tech can support #sustainability and #CircularEconomy —like sharing repair skills online—it's not a silver bullet for sustainability. More tech isn’t always better or greener, and the digital transition isn't always synonymous with a green one". Reducing emissions from methane is one of the most cost-effective ways to tackle the climate crisis and apply the emergency brake on climate tipping points. Ahead of COP29, the #MethaneMatters coalition brought together researchers, EU policymakers, and representatives from agriculture, energy and waste management sectors to discuss cross-sectoral strategies for collective action in the EU on methane emissions. From the need for more accurate data for targeted action to creating policies that support in the transition away from polluting practices, panellists and speakers covered the challenges and opportunities the EU faces when addressing emissions in the agriculture, waste and energy sectors. ⚡️ We only need a small fraction of land to achieve a 100% renewable energy system by 2040, and it does not need to be achieved at the cost of food production or nature protection. 📃 A nature-positive and participatory transition is possible, but requires strong political will and formulas that retain benefits within the communities hosting renewables. 🎙️ Curious to learn more? Tune in to the latest Energ' Ethic Podcast, where our own Cosimo Tansini discusses strategies for a rapid but sustainable roll-out of renewables. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gJbEeshb

How much land does Europe need for 100% renewable energy? Here’s the surprising answer: only 2.2% of Europe’s land—roughly the size of Croatia. That’s all it takes to power the continent with clean, renewable energy by 2040. But this isn’t just about land; it’s about planning smart and protecting nature. Here comes the Paris Agreement-compatible scenario (PAC). In my latest Energ' Ethic Podcast episode, Cosimo Tansini from the European Environmental Bureau explains how we can meet this goal without sacrificing biodiversity. Want to find out how?
