The European Defence Agency (EDA) is the hub for #EUdefence cooperation | An Agency of the #EuropeanUnion.

About us

Created in 2004 to support and facilitate cross-border defence cooperation, EDA has become the place in Europe where countries willing to develop their defence capabilities collaboratively can do so. EDA’s expertise and activities cover the whole spectrum of cooperation: from harmonising requirements to delivering operational capabilities; from research & technology (R&T) and innovation to developing technology demonstrators; from training and exercises to support to CSDP operations. EDA also closely engages with the European defence industry to enhance Europe’s defence technological and industrial base and help make the industry stronger and more competitive. The Agency’s role and impact have constantly grown, especially with the implementation of the EU’s Global Strategy (2016) which also led Member States to reinforce the Agency’s mission in 2017. Managed by Chief Executive Jiří Šedivý under the authority of Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

🌱 #CFSEDSS | Launch of Phase IV - Fast-tracking the defence #EnergyTransition for efficiency and resilience Today, the Consultation Forum for Sustainable Energy in the Defence and Security Sector (CF SEDSS) enters its fourth phase. This initiative of the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) is funded by the LIFE Programme and implemented by the European Defence Agency.  The project will run until 30 September 2028. As Europe's largest #defence energy community, building on its nine-year legacy, the Forum will continue bringing together experts from European Ministries of Defence, industry, academia and partners to support the defence sector in moving towards resilient, efficient and renewable energy models. This will enhance the European Union’s energy security and autonomy and safeguard the #sustainability, resilience and operational effectiveness of the armed forces. In Phase IV, the Forum will focus on: - Enhancing energy efficiency and improving the energy performance of building stock and fixed infrastructure  - Promoting the use of renewable energy in the defence sector  - Strengthening the protection and resilience of defence-related critical energy infrastructure  - Developing energy-related policy tools and methodologies, and identifying innovative and smart energy technologies for defence. These could help lower the carbon footprint, and increase the energy autonomy and operational resilience of the armed forces. Stay tuned for updates on CF SEDSS activities and events! #EUDefence #GreenDefence #StrongerTogether

EDA’s European Spartan Exercise in the Romanian sky✈️ The only dedicated European exercise for the C-27J Spartan military transport aircraft launches today for two weeks of intensive joint training. The ‘European #Spartan Exercise’ will take place at the 90th airlift base Otopeni, Romania with four participating nations: Romania, Slovakia, Italy, and Lithuania. In this edition, the European Spartan Exercise aims at enhancing the crew capabilities for Tactical air transport including #AirMedevac.  The European Spartan Exercise brings together three C-27J’s and around 150 personnel and will run from 30 September to 11 October 2024 in Romania. The core planning team, composed of personnel from participating nations and the EDA, already began work on 25 September for final preparations of the exercise. All planning cells include a representative of the participating nations, while medical personnel will plan dedicated missions for medical evacuation. ➡️Tactical training  The C-27J Spartan transport aircraft is designed to perform tactical missions in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations, providing direct air transport to the theatres of operations, day and night. It continues improving collaboration, synergies, and interoperability in the field of air transport among EU Member States. The Spartan Exercise also provides an opportunity for pilots and support troops to practice and refine their tactical skills in a rapidly changed simulated environment. Various flight operations will engage pilots in simulated combat scenarios. The second week of the exercise will be dedicated to Tactical Medevac activities. Several airfields in Romania have been chosen for training with crews due to perform tactical approaches, material (CDS) and personnel airdrops, also using unprepared runway and short airfield for take-off and landing.     ➡️European C-27J community  This annual flying exercise, which is part of the EDA’s dedicated C-27J programme gathers six participating Member States operating C-27J -the four afore-mentioned countries plus Bulgaria and Greece.  It aims at identifying and developing common projects in the domains of operations, training, logistics, procurement, airworthiness and Single European Sky Air Traffic Management Research (#SESAR) to achieve a high level of interoperability and cost-efficient operating and maintenance models.     #EUDefence #AirMobility

The European Defence Agency (EDA) brought together representatives from 16 European Union Member States, the European Commission, the European External Action Service, the EU Military Staff, the European Space Agency - ESA and NATO for a two-day meeting at EDA's headquarters in Brussels. The meeting aimed at coordinating and streamlining efforts with the implementation of the Capability Development Plan and its space strategy for security and defence.     The Defence in Space forum was the sixth and largest gathering since its inception in 2022. It discussed the Space Priority Implementation Roadmaps stemming from the 2023 EU Capability Development Priorities, as well as the tasks assigned to EDA in implementing the #EUSpace strategy. EDA will contribute to identify critical space technologies, to provide military requirements for the EU Space Programme to the Commission, and in developing space education and training for #security and #defence.    Some EU Member States have strategies governing the way they work in space. For others an EU Space Strategy for Security and Defence might serve as an inspiration for stronger involvement in the domain.     Observation, navigation, communication EDA’s expertise plays a unique role as a bridge between space projects run by different initiatives, such as Permanent Structured Cooperation (#PESCO), the European Defence Fund (EDF) and the EU Space Programme.   At the September forum, space planners discussed space situational awareness, access, protection of space systems, space-based earth observation, positioning, navigation, and satellite communication.      The Defence in Space forum was launched within EDA in October 2022. It was an outcome of the EU’s defence review, #CARD, which identified defence in space as an area for collaboration.    #EUDefence #space #capability
