Yesterday, we participated in the Antwerp Dialogue on shaping an effective trade policy to combat deindustrialisation in Europe and address global overcapacities, organised by AEGIS Europe and industriAll Europe! 🌍💼 A special thanks to Norsk Hydro and Bruno D'hondt for representing our industry! Addressing overcapacity is of crucial importance for the European #aluminium industry as subsidised industrial overcapacity in China poses a fundamental threat to our sector. Over the past few decades, China's non-market practices have created an unfair playing field. Their use of subsidies and low pricing has led to a surge of Chinese products in our markets, lowering the competitiveness of European producers. For aluminium, overcapacity began a few years ago in the primary segment and has since extended to semi-transformation and recycling. Today, it also impacts several finished products containing aluminium, such as #BEVs and #solar panels. Chinese overcapacity for semi-finished aluminium products is equivalent to three times the entire EU demand for these products. ✅Our key messages included: 🔹 A pragmatic approach to EU trade defence is essential. This includes initiating more ex-officio cases, assertively implementing existing EU Trade Defence Instruments (TDIs) and preventing the circumvention of trade measures. 🔹 Developing additional measures, such as tariffs, is necessary to counteract unfair trade practices, especially those originating from non-market economies. 📄Want to know more about our stance on overcapacity? Our Director General, Paul Voss, and our Director of Sustainability, Sandro Starita, together with delegates from the aluminium associations of U.S., Canada, and Japan, met with representatives from the OECD - OCDE and the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris! 🗣️ While gathering useful insights on the ongoing work in both organisations on industrial value chains and their competitiveness, this visit gave us the opportunity to present and discuss: 🔹 the strategic role of #aluminium in our economies and societies 🔹 the characteristics of the aluminium value chain and the identified pathways to decarbonise operations 🔹 the challenges to our sector’s competitiveness caused by unfair trade practices, particularly the distorting effects of certain types of state subsidies ✅The outcome of this debate will support the OECD and the IEA in issuing recommendations to national governments on how to develop consistent and effective trade and energy policies. We look forward to further cooperation with both organisations! 📄To explore the pathways to decarbonise further, dive into our study ‘Net-Zero by 2050: Science-based Decarbonisation Pathways for the European Aluminium Industry’ ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d4fMPsqS #competitiveness #tradepolicy #sustainability

The latest package of sanctions against Russia includes restrictions on the import of Russian LNG, marking a crucial move in reducing Europe's energy dependence. Yet, it's important to note that the #aluminium sector, a significant revenue source for Russia, remains untouched by these sanctions 🤔 ➡️ The European aluminium industry, bolstered by imports from diverse regions, has proven its ability to meet the continent's strategic raw material needs. It's time for the EU to extend its sanctions to include Russian aluminium, further diminishing the economic support for actions contrary to European values. #sanctions #rawmaterials

In the new edition of our monthly #Aluminium4Europe LinkedIn newsletter, we talk about the crucial role of aluminium in enhancing the energy efficiency of European buildings! 🏢 Because of its flexibility and adaptability, #aluminium is extensively used in building and construction, including for windows and doors, curtain walls, ventilated facades, roofing, tiles, shading devices, ceilings and internal partitions. It’s also vital in heating and ventilation equipment and structural applications like prefabricated buildings or bridges. Our Director Engineered Products & Business Development, Bernard Gilmont, says that 40% of EU energy needs come from the building sector. As the EU has been facing a huge energy crisis in recent years, ensuring energy-efficient buildings must be a top priority for the next EU legislative cycle. With the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (#MEPS) in place, buildings will now be more energy efficient. One of our top priorities in this upcoming period will be to kick-start the Renovation Wave in the EU and achieve the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets ✅ 🗞️Read the latest edition of our monthly newsletter below to find out more about what Bernard has to say ⬇ Don’t miss out on future editions, and subscribe today to the #Aluminium4Europe newsletter! #buildings #EURenovationWave

Last week, 🇪🇺 leaders at the Council of the European Union Summit agreed to introduce a New European Competitiveness Deal by the end of the year ✅ The European aluminium industry welcomes this great development 🙌. A well-designed Deal can help create a stable, predictable regulatory environment crucial for scaling production, fostering innovation, and securing strategic supply chains. Reducing regulatory burdens and promoting a competitive landscape will help maintain global competitiveness and contribute to Europe's economic and industrial sovereignty. In line with these goals, the #AntwerpDeclaration we signed calls for a comprehensive action plan to elevate competitiveness as a strategic priority, create the conditions for a stronger business case in Europe, and make Europe a globally competitive provider of energy. It also proposes a Competitiveness Check for evaluating new legislation and policy initiatives. We hope to see these points reflected in the Competitiveness Deal! #competitivenessdeal #industry
