⚠ 🚰 Several regions within the EU are facing critical water #shortages, with #Romania among the most affected. Many citizens in are struggling to meet their basic needs, a situation worsened by the summer heat and rising temperatures. 👏 We support Water Europe’s key recommendations for improved and effective regulations on water management and call for a comprehensive European Water Strategy: bit.ly/3wfFyUR With the #EUParliament and the President of the European Commission now established, we urge EU leaders to prioritize water management across all sectors during the 2024-2029 mandate. 🚱Romania restrict water access to citizens in 20 municipalities. On Tuesday the 2nd of July, the European Economic and Social Committee held a meeting regarding the need to build a comprehensive water strategy in the context of the climate biodiversity emergencies: https://buff.ly/4d6LSOC 🚨 Florian Marin highlighted Romania's water scarcity crisis, despite being one of the EU's richest countries in water resources. Alarmingly, over 20 municipalities in Romania have restricted water access due to scarcity: https://buff.ly/3zE2lLt 🚿About 1/3 of the Romanian population lacks basic amenities like a bath, shower, or indoor flushing toilet. Furthermore, only 12% of Romanians consider tap water safe, and a mere 12% of sewage is treated according to EU standards: https://buff.ly/4d4Vd9n 📉 Romania also faces significant water losses, unaccounted and unbilled water quantities, contributing to 8% of the EU's total CO2 emissions: https://buff.ly/4f05JRj 💡Key recommendations include: 1 - A dedicated EU commissioner for water. 2 - A human rights-based approach to water to combat water poverty. 3 - Sustainable, equitable, high-quality, and affordable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services for all. 4 - International policies for efficient water use across all sectors, reducing pollution, and restoring degraded waters. 5 - Significant reduction of water losses from leaks and waste by agriculture, industry, and households. 💧 Like Romania, all European countries are beginning to feel the effects of water scarcity. This underscores the critical need to transition towards a Water-Smart Society to address today's challenges and prevent them from becoming tomorrow's crises. 🗣 💧 “Concrete action is needed to boost #water security and #resilience across the European Union”. Portugal, along with twenty other member states, is urging the prioritization of a European water strategy in the 2024-2029 #EUAgenda. The letter addressed to EU policymakers emphasizes the critical role of water across various sectors, including #energy and #industry. As the EU-ASE we advocate for a European Water Strategy! 🚰 We must: 📃 Strengthen the EU and National policy and regulatory framework ensuring efficiency in water supply and demand. 🤝 Integrate fresh and saltwater resources going from urban waste water treatment plants to agriculture and desalination processes and achieve resilience. 💡 Provide finance for innovation, research and implementation.

⏳ As we approach tomorrow’s Council meeting, where the strategic agenda for 2024-2029 will be a key topic, we urge a stronger focus on #water and #energyefficiency to drive Europe’s #competitiveness while delivering a socially fair and green climate transition. 💧 We underscore the critical importance of the Water Resilience Initiative, emphasizing that water must be prioritized in the upcoming mandate. Integrating water management into the strategic agenda is essential for safeguarding our future and boosting Europe’s competitiveness. Together, we can build a #WaterWiseEU and make water a central priority for the next five years! 👉 Read our joint letter to deliver the Water Resilience Initiative: bit.ly/49M30rx 📄 Check out EU-ASE's Water Strategy Document: bit.ly/3wfFyUR ⚠ We also call on policymakers to ensure the well-being of all Europeans by advancing energy efficiency and phasing out fossil fuels, as these steps are essential for achieving #netzero goals. ✒ Along with a group of stakeholders, we have signed a letter urging EU and national policymakers to prioritize #skills and workforce development in the new EU institutional term. The letter highlights that trends in digitalisation, #energyefficiency, and industrialisation require reshaping the current labour market and states that “policymakers must address systemic skills and labour shortages as a top priority for Europe’s transformation, so that the labour market is an enabler rather than an obstacle to realise the objectives set in Europe for the past 5 years”. 🚨 We urge decision makers to implement the skills provisions in the Energy Efficiency Directive on time, secure funding, assess current and future workforce needs in strategic sectors and reform education systems. 📝 The letter and its key asks are fully aligned with the creation of a European Pact of Skills for Energy Efficiency that we will launch in the next weeks.
