🌍 Meet our #TeamLocalEurope! With the names of the new European Commissioners still to be presented this week, cities are already one step ahead. Led by Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig and President of Eurocities, mayors and deputy mayors from across Europe successfully formed a gender-balanced body to act as direct counterparts to the incoming European Commission College. 📢 As Burkhard Jung emphasises: “The issues we face – from the rise of populism to climate change and refugee integration – require EU-level solutions implemented locally. The Eurocities Shadow Commission will make sure our voices are heard, and together, we will build a more inclusive, sustainable, and dynamic Europe.” #Ifmayorsruledtheworld

🌱 Cities are driving the future of sustainable food systems in Europe! 🌍 At the Food Trails Final Conference, leaders from across Europe came together to discuss how cities are at the forefront of transforming food policies for a healthier, more sustainable future. “Food is at the centre of different food policies, for example, climate change,” said Giorgio Gori, Member of the European Parliament, highlighting the vital link between food and sustainability. Despite challenges with existing EU legislation, cities are finding ways to innovate. As Patrick Papadato, Vice President of Bordeaux Metropole, shared, "Cities have a powerful lever to develop local supply chains and create new outlets for farmers—food public procurement." The need for a more inclusive approach was echoed by Anna Scavuzzo, Vice Mayor of Milan and Eurocities Shadow Commissioner for Sustainable Food Systems: "The food system needs to be inclusive, healthy, and sustainable." The legacy of the Food Trails project is clear. Cities like Milan, Bordeaux, and others are leading the charge and hope to inspire future EU food policies. As Paul Milbourne from Cardiff University remarked, "Urban Food Policies recognise food as an important feature of local governments; they enable cities to address health, climate change, and poverty." On 10 April 2024, after nearly five years of negotiations and extensive public and political debate, the European Parliament approved the new Pact on Migration and Asylum. This latest reform represents a significant shift in how the EU approaches asylum, migration, and border management. But what do digital regulations have to do with the New Pact on Migration and Asylum? 👇🏾 Léa Lebon

Can the digitalisation of policy instruments further discriminate against migrant communities? How can local authorities protect migrants’ digital rights? The report ‘Cities and migrants' rights in the Era of Digitalisation - Implications of the Digital Regulations in the New Pact on Migration and Asylum’ argues that the pact poses a significant risk of strengthening disproportionate surveillance, and discriminatory procedures based on technology. Europe's cities are driving the future of digital democracy! 💡 🏙 Representatives from five cities gathered in Barcelona recently for the first-ever Nets4Dem Democracy Lab, where they worked together to find new digital solutions to the complex democratic challenges facing their local administrations. Staff from 🇵🇹 Cascais, 🇹🇷 Istanbul, 🇳🇱 Rotterdam, 🇧🇬 Sofia and 🇱🇹 Vilnius collaborated with an experienced team of democracy experts to identify how they can use digital tools to ensure people’s voices are heard. Organised by Eurocities and Barcelona City Council, the Lab’s goal was to give the cities realistic, actionable ideas to bring back to their administrations. “Most of Europe’s population live in our cities and these are the places that must develop solutions to the democratic crisis we face," said Democracy Lab mentor Elizabeth Calderón Lüning. No children should grow up in poverty. The effects of child poverty are long-lasting, impacting cognitive, emotional, and social development, as well as overall health. “Social exclusion of children is unacceptable,” said Rotterdam Vice Mayor Natasha Mohamed Hoesein at the meeting of the Child Guarantee national coordinators chaired by the European Commission. She outlined the city’s integrated approach, which addresses every aspect of a child’s life while placing families at the heart of its actions. “But we, cities, cannot do this alone”, Hoesen emphasized. She called for greater cooperation across local, national, and European levels and stressed the need for cities to have direct access to ESF funding to effectively implement the Child Guarantee. At Eurocities, our Working Group on Children and Youth serves as a platform where local authorities come together to exchange knowledge, tackle shared challenges, and explore solutions to make the Child Guarantee a reality at the local level. https://lnkd.in/dkBB94PC Alexandra Weerts
