Did you know that hundreds of thousands of materials and compounds could be synthesised but have not been yet? While the majority of these may have limited appeal, some may hold significant potential for the development of new technologies. Whether it's for designing higher capacity batteries 🔋, more efficient photovoltaic panels ☀️ or hydrogen storage solutions⛽,the demand for novel materials and compounds with distinct properties is substantial. However, synthesising all these materials to test their properties poses an insurmountable task, necessitating the exploration of alternative approaches. Dr Matthew Evans, a BEWARE Research Fellow at Université catholique de Louvain - and Matgenix (founded by Gian-Marco Rignanese and David Waroquiers), sheds light on their ability to conduct analyses of thousands of materials through numerical simulations 🖥️. Using their own open-source software, combined with machine learning methods, on supercomputers like Lucia (at Cenaero) and LUMI supercomputer, they can explore and understand the properties of numerous materials without the need for exhaustive physical synthesis. As EuroCC@Belgium ventured into the heart of Namur 🏰🌳🌊🛶🍻, we were greeted by the sight of one of the main roads under construction ⛏. This scene brought to mind a story about two construction workers 👷. When asked, 'What are you doing?' one replied, 'I’m laying bricks,' while the other said, 'I am building a cathedral' ⛪. This story resonates with us at EuroCC. It reminds us that keeping an eye on the end goal 🎯, the 'why' behind our actions, drives and motivates us. During our quarterly on-site meeting at Université de Namur, we took a moment to reflect on our mission. We reviewed the road we had travelled, celebrated our smooth successes, and strategised over the bumps. How about you?
