Keynote presentations from esteemed CST- Heat Pump professionals were made in the first session of our CST-Heat Pumps workshop.
Yuvaraj Pandian from Solarlite, emphasized the following key messages:
· Importance of hybrid systems to increase the economic viability and social acceptance of renewable energy projects,
· Opportunities for heating/ cooling for buildings/communities in combination with seasonal thermal energy storage,
· Advantages of CST-HP hybrid systems including reduction of land requirements, reduction of high CAPEX requirements and balance of OPEX and resource availability requirements and price volatility
· Example case example of brewery in Austria
Robert de Boer – Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) , Netherlands emphasized the following key messages:
· Heat pump technicalities, including process needs to increase efficiency were detailed,
· Heat pump for industrial applications have been emphasized to work better in continuous vs. intermittent production where batch operation is possible by integrating thermal storage,
· Flexibility through parallel or serial configuration was detailed,
· Heat pump potential for covering heat demand between 100-280 degrees Celsius (low, medium, pressure steam)
Pankaj Kumar – United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) addressed the importance of successful case studies. Example from India, in a particularity to the pharmaceutical industry mentioned the importance of :
· Critical selection of technology based on demand,
· Combination of hybridization examples which have been proven to be cost efficient in reducing high investment costs,
· Relevance of understanding process engineering requirements to understand and highlight needed technology,
· Integration of CST with heat pumps which can increase storage up to 12-14 hours in relation to regular thermal demand,
· The challenges to consider mentioned include high upfront costs, intermittency, heat pump compatibility, thermal energy storage, location-specific design, maintenance and operation, energy storage duration and policy regulation requirements.
The workshop will continue with roundtable discussions and Q&A interactions on the topic.
