Equality bodies and Equinet - Promoting equality in Europe
About us
Equinet, European Network of Equality Bodies was set up in 2007 as a membership organisation for national equality bodies. These public organisations are tasked to assist victims of discrimination, monitor and report on discrimination issues, and promote equality. They are legally required to do so in relation to one, some, or all of the grounds of discrimination covered by European Union (EU) law – gender, race and ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion or belief, and disability. MISSION Equinet promotes equality in Europe by supporting Equality Bodies to be independent and effective catalysts for more equal societies, and delivers its mission in a way that embodies and promotes its values, namely: Equality, Respect, Dignity, Solidarity, Diversity, Inclusion, Transparency, Participation, Innovation, Justice, Protection. VISION Our vision of an equal society is one where equality is a reality for everyone, diversity is valued, and all forms of discrimination have been eliminated.

With the rise in anti-Muslim hatred, how can we build alliances and cooperation to counter this harmful phenomenon? In May, Equinet and the EC Coordinator on combating anti-Muslim hatred, Marion Lalisse, organized a joint meeting, bringing together Equality Bodies, EC officials, CSOs, and academics to strengthen cooperation. During the meeting, participants identified issues, practices, and strategies that address discrimination and intolerance against Muslims. ⚖️ In 2023, Equinet worked to empower #EqualityBodies and strengthen EU equality legislation to protect rights-holders and promote justice restoration. • Enforcement of anti-discrimination laws: Equinet conference and report on sanctions and remedies discussed how to ensure effective and consistent application of equality laws across the EU. • Tackling harassment: Equinet organised a training session to equip Equality Bodies with legal strategies and case precedents to address harassment, both online and offline. • Making recommendations: Equinet released a Policy Paper highlighting the advisory role of Equality Bodies in shaping legislation and policy from an equality perspective. • Advancing gender equality in employment: Equinet built the capacity of Equality Bodies concerning the Pay Transparency Directive and Work-Life Balance Directive. 🔗 Discover all the Highlights from 2023: https://lnkd.in/dQnjKMyu

Read the joint statement by the Council of Europe-European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights-European Network of National Human Rights Institutions-EQUINET Collaborative Platform on Social and Economic Rights ⬇ This statement is addressed to government representatives at the High-Level Conference on the #EuropeanSocialCharter taking place later this week in Vilnius. In a time of persistent economic inequalities, demographic challenges, housing shortages, rising climate change, and social disparities, the Platform calls on governments to: 1️⃣ Reaffirm their commitment to the European Social Charter, by ratifying the Revised European Social Charter and accepting additional provisions. 2️⃣ Address social and economic inequalities with comprehensive social policies, emphasizing the right to adequate and affordable housing and the right to protection from poverty and social exclusion as fundamental human rights. 3️⃣ Accept the collective complaints procedure as an effective good governance mechanism and strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the Charter organs, States Parties, National Human Rights Institutions, Equality Bodies and civil society organisations. Together, we can address social and economic inequalities, and promote #SocialJustice across Europe. 🤝 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eDdEJmuw

🧠In 2023, Equinet took a deep dive into intersectionality, further advancing the work of #EqualityBodies through impactful trainings and workshops: • Intersectionality and Multiple Discrimination Data Collection & Analysis: Building on our commitment to an intersectional approach, Equinet's training equipped Equality Bodies with the methods needed to collect and analyse data that considers how different identities can be discriminated against simultaneously. ✊This empowers them to effectively tackle these complex forms of discrimination. • Supporting De-institutionalization with an Intersectional Lens: Our workshop explored the role of Equality Bodies in transitioning to community-based services, considering how various identities (disability, race, gender, etc.) might be impacted by such changes. 💶The event highlighted best practices and opportunities to promote independent living inclusively. 🔗 Discover all the Highlights from 2023: https://lnkd.in/dQnjKMyu

Read the call for the German government to lift their reservation and allow an agreement on the EU Horizontal Directive published by ILGA-Europe, European Network Against Racism Aisbl (ENAR), European Disability Forum and AGE Platform Europe. After the adoption of the EU Directives on Standards for Equality Bodies, the Horizontal Directive is now the missing piece to ensure full protection in the EU against discrimination based on age, race and ethnic origin, gender, disability, religion or belief, and sexual orientation in all fields of life. 📣 Following the proposal for the Horizontal Directive by the European Commission in 2008, Equinet has worked extensively to support and encourage progress on this important legislation (https://lnkd.in/d9EkgC6n). We now urge Member States to finally move beyond this long impasse and adopt the Directive. The swift adoption of the EU Standards Directives, just 1.5 years after the proposals, shows that political will to create more equal and inclusive societies can expedite equality legislation. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eNsSTNJK

The adoption of the Horizontal Directive is key to full #Equality in the EU ✨ The Horizontal Directive was proposed by the European Commission in 2008 but an agreement is still to be reached. This crucial Directive would extend protection against discrimination based on age, disability, religion or belief, and sexual orientation beyond employment. The recently adopted EU Directives on Standards for Equality Bodies have better equipped Equality Bodies across Europe to assist victims and promote equality. ➡ The Horizontal Directive is now the missing piece for an EU equality framework that would ensure full protection against discrimination based on age, race and ethnic origin, gender, disability, religion or belief, and sexual orientation in all fields of life. 🤝 Equinet thanks the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 for their efforts in promoting this key legislation. 📣 We urge Member States to move beyond this long impasse and adopt the Directive. The swift adoption of the EU Standards Directives, just 1.5 years after the proposals, shows that political will to create more equal and inclusive societies can expedite equality legislation. Equinet has long worked to support and encourage progress on the Horizontal Directive. 🔗 See our call for adoption: https://lnkd.in/d9EkgC6n ILGA-Europe Amnesty International AGE Platform Europe European Disability Forum European Network Against Racism Aisbl (ENAR)

🍃At Equinet, we are working to ensure the fight against #ClimateChange is fair and inclusive. In 2023, we focused on understanding how climate change disproportionately impacts vulnerable groups. We assessed the EU Green Deal to identify areas where green transition measures might have unintended consequences. 🌱Our goal? Empowering Equality Bodies to play a key role! They can help ensure a just transition that protects vulnerable groups and leaves no one behind. 🔗 Discover all the Highlights from 2023: https://lnkd.in/dQnjKMyu
