About us

The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) represents the majority of the European heat pump industry. Its members comprise of heat pump and component manufacturers, research institutes, universities, testing labs and energy agencies. Its key goal is to promote awareness and proper deployment of heat pump technology in the European market place for residential, commercial and industrial applications. EHPA aims to provide technical and economic input to European, national and local authorities in legislative, regulatory and energy efficiency matters. All activities are aimed at overcoming market barriers and dissemination of information in order to speed up market development of heat pumps for heating, cooling and hot water production.

Updates

  • Our market figures are out! 3.02 million heat pumps were sold in 2023 in 21 European countries. That's a drop of 6.5% on the previous year. If annual sales stay at this level of around 3 million, there will be 45 million heat pumps in Europe in 2030. This is 25% less than the EU's aim of 60 million, according to its climate modelling... Such a gap would be a blow to Europe's net zero industrial leadership and its path to net zero. The heat pump sector represents €7 billion of investments and provides around 170,000 direct jobs. The total heat pumps now installed in Europe avoid 7.3 Megatonnes (Mt) of CO2 every year. But why have sales slumped, and what does this mean? Two key things: 1) Changing national policies. For example, in the Netherlands, stable policies have boosted growth... While in Italy, a changing support scheme shook consumer confidence.   2) Energy prices. Specifically, gas prices becoming cheaper compared to electricity, where bills are often heavily taxed. The chart below show the relationship between energy prices & heat pump sales! We know that the future is bright for heat pumps. They are gaining market share on boilers all the time - see those upwards lines on the graph. But we need to speed it up, and maximise the potential. How?   Two essential steps: 1) Stabilise policies through the EU Heat Pump Action Plan. Due out several months ago, unexpectedly postponed - it should be published fast by the new European Commission! 2) Ensure taxes are moved away from electricity bills to correct the energy price distortion & allow heat pumps a fair chance. If we do this we can boost Europe’s clean tech expertise and help ensure a future competitive net zero economy! All while helping decarbonise the heating & cooling sector. • Excited to share that today EHPA participated in the kick-off meeting for the Tender Support Action on Heat Pumps at European Commission's Directorate General for Energy. Alongside our consortium partners – VITO and Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE - we had a productive discussion with representatives from CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency, DG ENERGY and EU Science, Research and Innovation about the first steps to take for an effective implementation of this project.   The tender stems from the EHPA Heat Pump Accelerator and aims to build on the results of R&I projects in both the building and industrial sectors. We will monitor deployment and competitiveness data for heat pumps, consult with key industrial and research stakeholders across the EU, and develop a collaborative research approach to promote affordable, efficient, smart, and interoperable heat pumps—especially in existing buildings where cost remains a barrier. This work will also support a dedicated activity strand within the SET Plan framework.   This tender joins six other projects that EHPA has won or initiated in 2024, further showcasing the strong collaboration between our Policy and Projects teams.   We'd like to thank the 45 organizations that responded to our call and supported our proposal through Letters of Support, showing their very interest in future work.   We are honoured to have been awarded this highly competitive tender, and we believe that the most forward-thinking and visionary network in the industry has been chosen to drive this initiative forward. #HeatPumps #HeatRight
