As Chair of the #CentralEasternEurope Task Force (CEE TF), I’m pleased to share highlights from our meeting on October 16-17, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland. We convened industry leaders and associations to discuss key issues affecting our region. We had the honor of engaging with Polish government officials on the EU General Pharmaceutical Legislation (GPL) revision, enhancing the competitiveness of the life-science sector, and the clinical trials landscape. We also emphasized the importance of patient engagement, drawing insights from the September CEE Patient Advocacy Group (PAG) Forum held in Warsaw. We also explored the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and its potential to improve healthcare delivery across CEE. Discussions included EU environmental legislation and its impact on our industry, as well as an overview of healthcare system challenges in CEE countries. Thank you to all participants for valuable contributions and to our host INFARMA - The Employers’ Union of Innovative Pharmaceutical Companies for their hospitality. Together, we are paving the way for a more collaborative and innovative healthcare future in #CEE. I look forward to our continued efforts in improving patient access to medicines and advocating for better healthcare outcomes! The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive will run counter to the Commission’s and Member States’ work on competitiveness and critical medicines. Given the new Commission’s commitment to policy coherence, competitiveness checks on legislation and ensuring the safe supply of critical medicines, an urgent review of the UWWTD is required before approval by the Council to properly address water pollution and prevent the harm the Directive would cause to patients and to Europe’s life science ambitions. The industry is 100% behind the ambition to tackle water pollution. Pharmaceutical companies are already leading in taking steps to reduce or stop processes which negatively impact the environment, and the industry is ready to pay its contribution for pollution mitigation. However, putting the entire responsibility of European water pollution on the shoulders of two sectors is neither logical nor fair; it will send research to more even-handed parts of the world, taking even more innovation and new medicines away from patients living in Europe. #Precision #oncology represents a radical shift in how we approach cancer treatment. Instead of treating #cancer based on the location or origin of the tumor in the body, treatments specifically target molecular or genomic alterations in the tumor, regardless of its location. It puts #patients first by deploying tailored diagnostics and treatments, enabling rapid interventions, and providing options when standard of care no longer helps. It has better outcomes, fewer adverse events, and reduces costs. 🇮🇪 Analysis from a large private hospital in Ireland demonstrated significant opportunities for cost savings through reduced side effects management, reducing costs to €23,718 for universal screening instead of €232,061 in hospitalization expenses. 🇫🇷 A testing program for diagnostics in France reduced the lung cancer patient pool for anti-EGFR treatment from 24,558 to 2,532 with treatment savings of €101.3 million, and prevented 22,026 patients from an unsuitable treatment. However, challenges to access precision oncology highlight disparities across countries in Europe. How can we work together to advance the precision oncology agenda in the EU?
