The ENGINE project focuses on enhancing the heavy manufacturing industry, using the marine sector as its use case, by optimising the supply value chain from start to finish. To do this effectively, the project faces challenges from two main directions – developing and maintaining existing manufacturing processes and products while improving performance, as well as developing new methodologies that deliver more sustainable and greener machines. Firstly, there’s the performance-oriented challenge: the marine sector deals with costly and technically complex products and components. Any unexpected downtime or unforeseen issues not covered in the design phase of the machine will face significant operational costs while problems are resolved. Improving the design, manufacture, and operation of these large marine products is, therefore, crucial – and digitised manufacturing processes will help with this. Secondly, there’s a significant thrust towards sustainability and decarbonisation in the marine industry which involves transitioning to sustainable fuels such as green fuels and e-fuels. However, integrating these new fuels poses technical challenges for existing technologies, while developing new technologies that use these new fuels and operate more sustainably is also a challenge. To move towards decarbonisation, these technical challenges must be addressed while, at the same time, the sustainability and circularity in the industry must also be improved. The focus of the ENGINE project, therefore, is to develop methodologies and underlying processes that can be applied in the marine sector but can also be used elsewhere across other heavy manufacturing industries. Competing effectively in today’s ever-changing global markets necessitates manufacturing firms to continually explore innovative production strategies, leveraging advanced digital technologies to enhance flexibility, productivity, quality, environmental sustainability, and cost efficiency. The advent of Industry 4.0 has facilitated the rapid evolution of digital technologies, helping to manage production complexity and enhance data-driven decision-making. However, despite the maturation of these technologies, their integration with other advanced production methods remains limited. Modern production paradigms must thus integrate complementary technologies to cover various facets of manufacturing decision-making. Zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) represents a disruptive approach that harnesses advanced digital technologies within quality, production, and maintenance management to elevate production performance. Rooted in strategies of detection, prevention, prediction, and repair, ZDM aims to eliminate defects, enhance product quality, and improve flexibility, and productivity, while also reducing costs and resource usage across industrial ecosystems.
