We are shaping smarter grids for your future!

About us

European Distribution System Operators (E.DSO) is the key-interface between Europe’s DSOs and the European institutions, and promotes the development and large-scale testing of smart grid technologies in real-life situations, new market designs and regulation. E.DSO gathers 39 leading electricity distribution system operators (DSOs) in 22 countries, including 3 national associations, cooperating to ensure the reliability of Europe’s electricity supply for consumers and enabling their active participation in our energy system. How? By shaping smarter grids for your future. E.DSO and its members are committed to taking on the huge challenges associated with realising the Energy Union, built on the EU’s ambitious energy, climate, security of supply, jobs and growth objectives. This involves ensuring the reliability and security of Europe’s electricity supply to consumers while enabling them to take a more active part in our energy system. E.DSO focuses on guiding EU research, demonstration and innovation (RD & I), policy and Member State regulation to support smart grids development for a sustainable energy system.

⚡ At the end of last year, the European Commission published the #GridActionPlan (GAP), which highlights the urgent need to enhance Europe’s power distribution network to support the growing #electricity demand. Action 9 of the GAP focuses on addressing financing obstacles for grid investments. E.DSO Paper Financing Mechanisms for #DSOs provides timely recommendations to contribute to the creation of effective financial instruments and mechanisms. In addition, it aims to support the upcoming Multi-Annual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034. 📝 Read more ➡️ https://bit.ly/3VKFVQk

E.DSO was present at the 10th Energy Infrastructure Forum held in Copenhagen on 27 and 28 June. ✨ The first day included the high-level panel “A fast-track to EU’s net zero energy infrastructure” as well as recognition given to E.DSO member E.ON Czech subsidiary EG.D for the signature of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Energy) cross-border distribution smart grids project Gabreta along with its German partner Bayernwerk. E.DSO highlights the increasing need for funding of cross-border projects at DSO level, of which the Gabreta project is a good example. Today, E.DSO was represented by Secretary General Charles Esser and Torsten Knop (E.ON) in a more of a traditional forum with topics of interest to E.DSO such as planning EU’s electricity distribution grids and anticipatory investments, incentives and tariffs. ⚡💰 ✅ Torsten Knop noted that E.DSO acknowledges that the Distribution Network Development Plans should take account of available flexibility and consider the specific requests of the customers and stakeholders to the degree possible. The necessary rules shall be part of the Network Code Demand Response, where they are already in the current draft developed by System Operators. Furthermore, when it comes to anticipatory investments, we should keep in mind that the social costs of underinvestment are much higher than those of overinvestment. ☝️ #EnergyIF #DSOs

Different #metrics are required to quantify the reliability of a network to ensure interventions and improve its performance. Traditionally, metrics such as CML (SAIDI) or CI (SAIFI) have worked well. However, the environment for electrical utilities is ever changing, assets are aging, network usage is changing to address climate change, and climate change is increasing the frequency and magnitude of once considered high impact low frequency (HILF) events. 📝 Read E.DSO Position Paper on climate resilience metrics for #ElectricityGrids and learn how resilience metrics can provide the basis to measure networks improvements in a changing climate environment. ➡️ https://bit.ly/4bmbsOd
