2024 European Spring Flax Sowing Overview: Throughout Europe, the winter was unusually wet, with consistent rainfall since mid-October. Consequently, the sowing of spring flax, typically beginning in mid-March, was delayed. In France, a small portion was sown in March, followed by another small segment around April 10, and the majority planted between April 20 and 25. Belgium and northern France only commenced sowing after April 20, concluding around May 10, due to persistently damp soil conditions. Official figures report a combined total of 180,000 hectares sown with spring and winter flax, though unofficial sources suggest a higher figure due to high flax prices. Of this total, approximately 25,000 hectares are winter flax. While the winter flax, sown last October, is currently flowering with varying lengths depending on the region, the spring flax is experiencing favorable conditions, germinating quickly thanks to regular rainfall and temperatures ranging from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius. Optimistically, we anticipate more favorable weather to ensure a successful harvest of European flax fiber, helping to replenish stocks after several years of poor flax crops.

2024 Egyptian Flax Harvest Overview This year's (Crop 2024) Egyptian flax harvest is the highest in history. The output of scutched flax fiber is estimated to be around 60,000 tons, with 2-drum short flax fiber expected to be around 40,000 tons. Both figures are unprecedented. Because due to the lack of organizations such as the Flax Association or the Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, information can only be obtained through private communication. The information provided by different Egyptians (flax farmers, retting factories, and flax merchants) varies greatly. The above figures are averaged for reference to the industry friends. The quality of the 2024 flax crop from Egypt is fairly good. Due to the massive production, significant differences will exist between different areas, producers, varieties, and channels. The latest Egyptian flax is harvested (pulled) in April and is retted through water in May. Some retting production lines have already operated and the others will be operated during the week of May 20th. New goods will be delivered by sea transport at the end of May or early June. Due to the impact of the Israel-Hamas war, all shipments currently have to change course and go around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. It will take more time from Egypt's main ports to China's and Indian main ports by at least half a month compared to normal conditions. Egypt now has 27 flax scutching flax production lines, with a monthly production capacity of 3,000 to 4,000 tons of scutched flax fiber. This means that the processing of this year's new flax in Egypt will continue until around the end of 2025, marking the first time this has happened in the history of Egyptian flax production.
Happy New Year from the entire Decolis team! Wishing you a prosperous 2024 filled with abundant, high-quality European flax fiber crops and success in advancing the entire linen industry. #europeanflax #flax #linen

Mr. Dong of Xindonmao in Yixing City stands out as a key figure and company in the Linen industry. As one of China's largest linen weavers, he has recently established a cutting-edge flax spinning unit in Muling, Heilongjiang, China. Grateful for the warm hospitality extended to the Belgian Flax Scutchers delegation at both the spinning and weaving units.
