🏚 The global #HousingCrisis is sustained by housing systems that fail to address the needs of the majority. Adopting a #HousingJustice lens can identify transformative interventions to challenge and reform these unfair and unsustainable systems. The new paper "Towards Housing Justice" by International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)'s Camila Cociña and Alexandre Apsan Frediani, makes 4 key propositions to reshape housing policy and practice: ➡ Anti-discriminatory Housing Policy: Promote affirmative actions to support systematically discriminated groups across gender, ethnicity, race, class, tenancy status, migration status, sexual orientation, and ability. ➡ Radically Democratic Housing Production: Embrace and expand democratic structures like cooperatives, community land trusts, and inclusive public housing. ➡ Housing as Infrastructure for Better Cities: Treat housing as social, care, and reparative infrastructure to promote sustainable urban development. ➡ Expanded Visions for Housing Futures: Engage with diverse actors and knowledge systems to address the needs and aspirations of the majority. ✨ Launching our new publication "Back to the Future: #Heritage-based Solutions for #ClimateResilience in #MENA Cities," developed in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity International, UN Environment Programme and the Union for the Mediterranean, among other partners. #Cities in the MENA region are grappling with severe climate challenges, including water shortages and floods. This year, temperatures exceeded 50°C in some areas, severely impacting public health. Solutions to protect our most vulnerable communities are urgently needed. We can leverage simple, cost-effective solutions from our historical Mediterranean cities, such as rainwater harvesting, natural cooling methods, and sun protection ☀. By rediscovering and adapting these techniques, we can address today's climate challenges, particularly in social housing and low-income neighbourhoods. 📑 Check the publication to see how: https://lnkd.in/e9prBeMq Sida European Parliament UNESCO C40 Cities ICLEI AVSI Foundation UNOPS ECDPM 🔎 🌍 Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH IHS, Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies of Erasmus University Rotterdam Clima-Med - Acting for Climate in South Mediterranean Stantec Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada

🌍 Introducing the #Her4Energy Toolkit ⚡ to assess and foster women's participation in climate-resilient energy initiatives. Despite their crucial role in energy management, women remain underrepresented in the energy sector. Her4Energy integrates gender perspectives into energy projects and policies. By transforming energy initiatives into inclusive, sustainable solutions, it aims to bridge the gender gap and empower women in the transition to sustainable energy. The tool encourages collaboration among policymakers, community leaders, and private sector partners. By empowering women to take leadership in the energy sector, the tool positions women as key agents of change in sustainable energy goals. How can nature-based solutions transform low-income urban communities? 🌱 The loss of nature and biodiversity due to urbanization and climate change directly affects cities and their residents, disproportionately impacting low-income communities. Co-organized by #GIZ and #ICLEI, this webinar will focus on: 🔸 Protecting vulnerable urban communities: Explore how nature-based solutions (NbS) can shield vulnerable residents from climate change impacts and disasters like floods, heat waves, and smog while enhancing their living conditions and overall quality of life. 🔸 Practical implementation of NbS: Gain insights into effective approaches and real-life projects for incorporating NbS into urban development processes. 🔸 Equitable inclusion: Learn methods for ensuring that informal dwellers and communities living in poverty are equitably integrated into NbS projects. This session is the second of five webinars in the Peer Learning series hosted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Cities Alliance. It aims to strengthen local actors' ability to act for socially just and climate-friendly urban transformation and create a roadmap towards the World Urban Forum in November 2024. 🗓️ 27 June 🕐 13:00 - 14:30 CEST 🔗 Register here: https://lnkd.in/dpUrZ8Yv UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), SDI. Cities Alliance reposted this
📢 Cities Alliance has launched a comprehensive strategy to tackle climate change in MENA cities with a focus on inclusivity and resilience. 👫 With 73% of MENA’s population (305 million) living in cities, it is crucial to ensure that urban spaces are ready for future heatwave, floods, and that the citizens' needs are taken into account. 💧 The MENA region holds only 1% of the world’s freshwater but covers 9.5% of the world’s land area. Key actions include: 🌱 Sustainable Infrastructure: Developing green and inclusive urban infrastructure such as parks, green roofs, and urban agriculture (for enhanced food security) 🏘️ Inclusive Planning: Engaging all residents, including women and marginalized communities, in climate adaptation efforts to address climate-resilient and gender-sensitive infrastructure. 💡 Renewable Energy: Integrating renewable energy sources in urban infrastructure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 👩👧👦 Support for Vulnerable Groups and Refugees: Implementing projects that target vulnerable populations, enhancing their resilience and livelihood options. 📊 Community Engagement: Empowering local communities, particularly women, in renewable energy projects and sustainable waste management. 🏛️ Regional Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships with local and national governments, NGOs, and grassroots organizations. 💼 Capacity Building: Training local authorities and community groups on climate adaptation and disaster risk management.
