The major European Conference & Exhibition on Electricity Distribution
About us
CIRED, the Leading Forum where the Electricity Distribution Community meets, holds the major International Electricity Conference & Exhibition every two years in different venues in Europe with a worldwide perspective and participation. CIRED covers •the whole field of Electricity Distribution Systems and associated services, including dispersed and embedded generation issues •the technical aspects of Electricity Supply •related aspects such as cost reduction, environment, regulation, organisation and related IT systems. In 3 full days of technical presentations and discussions, the conference covers the very latest challenges and issues facing electricity distribution today and in the future. The 2019 EVENT will take place in Madrid, located in the heart of Spain on 3-6 June 2019. Participation in CIRED 2019 offers an opportunity to meet with up to 1500 experts and benefits from face-to-face interaction with key decision leaders in the field of Electricity Distribution. An exhibition gathering over 120 companies will be running throughout the conference.

It’s been a fantastic two days of learning and networking for over 500 electricity distribution experts at the CIRED 2024 Vienna Workshop. Highlights from today’s sessions include: Our round table discussion on utilising demand and generation flexibility to enhance network hosting capacity; from price signals for flexibility to unlocking latent hosting capacity. 🙋♂️ Some of the questions for the panel were: "For local flexibility markets, the DSO must start buying large volumes of reservation and activation – how far away are they?" "Customers receive higher flex prices from their supplier than DSOs, are regulatory changes required to obligate suppliers to prioritise local grid constraints?" Our final oral session of the day then saw presentations on enabling increased hosting capacity through regulation, business models and customer involvement. Evaluating the trade off between grid expansion and flexibility usage in electrical distribution grids and the need for congestion management. And how energy transition presents both opportunity and challenges for DSOs, requiring innovative solutions to effectively manage grid constraints. Once again, our poster gallery saw the opportunity to meet the authors and discuss their research. 👋 If you were there with us, please let us know about your favourite moments from the workshop! We look forward to welcoming you in Chicago or Geneva. #CIRED #ElectricityDistribution #EnergyTransition

Some of our early rises took in some of the sights of Donaupark, Vienna on this lovely sunny morning. We even managed to spot the statues of some of the most important figures in international history including Salvador Allende’s bust and a statue of Simon Bolivar. #WellBeing #MorningWalk #CIRED

It’s been a fantastic first day at the CIRED 2024 Vienna Workshop. Highlights from today’s sessions include: DI Thomas Maderbacher, Chief Executive Officer, at Wiener Netze GmbH , Austria opened the workshop with his insights on Empowering the grid of tomorrow – discussing the many obstacles that need to be worked on including the legal regulations, robust forecast models, grid analysis and online data exchange between TSO and DSO. We then heard from Therese Åsheim, of Heimdall Power, Norway who explained as much as 99% of high voltage power lines are not monitored by sensors resulting in low observability and underutilisation of the grid’s assets and about the mounting pressure on the electricity grid. Our third keynote speaker, Patricia Neumann, Chief Executive Officer at Siemens then spoke about their commitment to decarbonisation; new pathway target of 55% reduction by FY25 and a new target to accelerate to 90% reduction by FY30. These keynotes really summarised the core messages for the workshop before diving into the first of our oral sessions providing an opportunity for our speakers to present their abstracts on enhancing hosting capacity through new methods for network planning and design. The afternoon’s sessions then started with a round table discussion: “Which needs must be satisfied by the DNO within standard connections? “ “What should be the minimum capacity for customers?” Just some of the questions concerning the issues most important in assessing hosting capacity. Our poster gallery then saw the opportunity to meet the authors and discuss their research before our second oral session on network operation and control supporting increased hosting capacity. All this was rounded off by bringing people together at our drink’s reception. We look forward to another exciting day tomorrow! #CIRED #ElectricityDistribution #EnergyTransition
