Lessons from the Netherlands on the benefits of smart charging, courtesy of ElaadNL - significant potential wins for DSO and EV drivers via enhanced grid efficiency, reduced costs, and financial benefits to EV users. More precisely: 🔋 Smart charging allows up to 6x more charging stations behind a transformer - this is crucial given limited equipment availability. 💡 If all EVs in the Netherlands engage in smart charging, approximately €0.9bn DSO grid investments can be avoided between 2025-30 and peaks can be reduced by 10-15% in 2030. 💸 If EV flexibility is compensated, users can generate additional revenues of 7-13% of charging costs. Thanks for the study, Elaad! The benefits are clear - now it's about the roadmap.

💡 Thanks for this excellent work as always, Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP)! Transparency on grid hosting capacity is key to streamlining and speeding up grid connection and permitting processes. Not all grid hosting maps are created equal; granularity is critical.

Electricity grids have finite capacity. As renewables thrive and new electrified end uses arise, pressure on the grid is mounting. Lack of grid capacity is already a key barrier to deploying new renewables and connecting new consumers, such as EV charging infrastructure, and capacity is likely to continue to lag behind what is needed for several years to come. This is exacerbated by inefficient grid connection procedures that are unable to keep up with the surge in requests. The resulting long connection queues and delayed projects risk holding back Europe's accelerating energy transition. Greater transparency will not solve the need to build more grid infrastructure, but it can speed up what is currently a very inefficient application process. It can help eliminate "fishing" for capacity with multiple applications for a new grid connection. It can also provide a platform for matching resources with complementary load/generation profiles: think of co-locating a solar farm with an EV charging hub and a battery. Elisabeth Cremona and Chris Rosslowe from Ember and Zsuzsanna Pató from Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) give an overview of the maps currently available from European DSOs and TSOs and provide details on what an ideal grid hosting capacity map would look like. Their recommendations have shaped this great interactive visualisation of what an ideal map would look like, offering granular insights, detailed horizons, data portability and matchmaking opportunities. Thanks to ChargeUp Europe members for sharing insights into their planning work and the barriers they face in securing grid capacity for EV charging hubs!

On your way to your summer destination with an EV? Then you're most likely using a route planner to help you connect with available charging options on the road🔌🗺️ But how should they operate to give transparency and options to EV drivers? Our new paper lifts the veil: ⭐ Prioritize EV Drivers: The process for selecting charging points displayed on an EV's dashboard should focus on the needs and preferences of EV drivers. 🔍 Put Transparency Front and Center: Clear and transparent criteria for including charging points in route planners and for the algorithms that prioritize and rank Points of Interest (POIs) should be established and communicated. 🤝 Promote Fair Competition: a level playing field must be fostered by guaranteeing non-discriminatory access to all charging options and clearly labelling sponsored listings. It's about trust, transparency and choice, putting EV drivers' needs at the forefront of decision-making. Think about it when you reach that vacation spot!

🔍What do we learn when one of our members, Shell Recharge Solutions, poll over 33,000 drivers? 📈 In a nutshell: confidence is on the rise – and so are EU EV drivers’ expectations. 🚗 Six in ten European EV drivers would travel further to get a better charging experience, e.g. access to superior amenities; ⚡️ With charging infrastructure exceeding demand in some markets, Charge Point Operators (CPOs) that don't prioritise experience may struggle to maintain utilisation; 🌐 Range confidence is the new reality: over half of EV drivers across Europe worry less about range than they did a year ago, while over 2/3 feel charging options have improved in the last 12 months. The picture that is emerging is one where greater emphasis is being placed on the quality of the overall charging experience. And that’s good news for EV drivers! As our Board member Florian Glattes notes, "With the confidence of EV drivers strengthening, the task at hand is clear: the public charging infrastructure and experience must keep pace with driver needs and expectations."

The transition to electric vehicles isn’t just eco-friendly—it’s a major job creator! The latest report from the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s World Energy Outlook shows that by 2030, clean energy technologies, including #EVs, are set to create more than double the #jobs lost in the fossil fuel sector. As we accelerate towards an electric future, it’s clear the shift is not just about cleaner air and cutting emissions—it’s a powerful engine for job creation. The biggest gains are seen in the manufacturing of electric cars and their batteries as well as other inherently #local jobs such as grid management and power generation and storage.

🌟 Implementing the Right to Plug: Empowering Private #EVCharging Infrastructure Across the #EU 🌟 The Right to Plug grants anyone the ability to easily install an #EVcharger at home or at work without unnecessary administrative burdens. 85% of EV charging happens at private locations. Right to Plug is crucial for the continued rollout of EV charging infrastructure. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) finally acknowledges this right, but swift national implementation is essential. Our joint recommendations, developed together with AVERE - The European Association for Electromobility, Eurelectric, EuropeOn - The European Electrical Contractors Association and Transport & Environment (T&E), provide the roadmap to effectively implementing the Right to Plug on a national level, inspired by successful practices in key #MemberStates. 🔋 Together, let's accelerate the rollout of private chargers and advance #EMobility!
