Our Q3 Board meeting in Lisbon had everything. Brazilian art and dinner with a Minister. A Tuk Tuk ride and irresistible Portuguese hospitality. The past and the future, with a former coal plant visit and a smart charging demo. Sun and fun, but of course deeper discussions, from how the EV charging infrastructure sector continues to invest in expanding networks to why EVs are the best technology. We’ll continue to be the “can” voice, coordinating outreach with our members, and push for measures that lead to higher volumes of EVs. Deepest, warmest thanks to EDP Portugal for a high-quality programme and exceptional hosting – that’s one for the books! Transport & Environment (T&E)'s www.industryfor35.org is a powerful reminder that the #EU2035 target "provides the much needed investment certainty on the future of the #automotive industry in Europe.” ⚡ Let's hear from some of our members' CEOs who, like ChargeUp Europe, support this initiative: 🗣️ "We are committing over a billion euros to develop an extensive fast-charging network. As a key player in infrastructure investment, we require industry stability, underscored by clear guidelines and well-defined milestones. The path to 2035, including specific CO2 milestones, was established in 2014 and 2019. We rely on this stability to make informed and effective investments and ask the legislator to not change the rules during the game." Aurelien de Meaux, Electra “The 2035 deadline for phasing out tailpipe emissions, supported by the charging infrastructure targets in AFIR and EPBD, were carefully worked out over the last few years and provide clear direction for all of us to do our part in our sphere to deliver them. The electric vehicle technology is proven and tested. As long as we offer makes and models of EVs at different price points to serve more, varied customers – and the charging to support those drivers – we will meet our agreed upon goals.” Peter Badik, GreenWay Infrastructure "Above all else, Europe's businesses and consumers need certainty. Wavering on established policies waters down not only Europe's climate goals, but also Europe's political weight. We need to keep our commitments.” Thomas Rowlands, Plugsurfing “Keeping the EU's 2035 ambition for transport electrification is an imperative. The targets are a catalyst for innovation and economic growth across the EV value chain, including in the EV charging infrastructure sector where Europe's industry leadership is demonstrated globally.” ⚡ Orlin RadEV ⚡, AMPECO Let's keep a laser-sharp focus on delivery. 🎯

Today CEOs and executives from Volvo Cars, Uber, leasing giant Ayvens and over 40 other companies called on the EU to not re-open the 2035 zero-emission target for cars and vans. In a public declaration, the automotive, clean tech, transport and energy companies say the target provides much needed investment certainty on the future of the automotive industry in Europe. The signatories, including executives from Polestar, Rivian, Iberdrola, A.P. Moller - Maersk, Tesco and IKEA’s largest franchisee, Ingka Group, said the target is feasible and necessary and gives companies a clear direction. These companies are strongly committed to the EU’s climate neutrality goal and many have invested massively to make it a reality. The new EU Commission and MEPs must establish the regulatory stability companies need by not wavering on the 2035 phase-out of the sale of combustion engines cars. Instead, they should focus on implementing targeted industrial policy and investment support for a sustainable local battery value chain, rolling out charging and clean electricity supply, greening corporate fleets, and re-skilling workers for the electric transition. “The transition will not happen at a pace at which it needs to happen if all actors do not commit” This is what our Policy Director, Gabrielė Šimakauskaitė, emphasized yesterday at the Conference on the EU Automotive Ecosystem, hosted by the #HU24EU alongside European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). During the panel on "Accelerating E-Mobility in the EU: Key Priorities and Challenges," Gabriele dove into ChargeUp Europe's vision for scaling recharging infrastructure across the EU, highlighting the importance of legal certainty for the competitiveness of the EU’s industry, sparking a dynamic discussion on the future of transport. ⚡ We thank the Hungarian Presidency for organizing this high-level event. We were pleased to strengthen our relationships with key industry players and EU decision-makers.

As the #EVcharging industry grows, EV drivers need to be able to drive confidently - and a lot of that comes from being able to charge reliably. Uptime is a key metric for providers to track how reliable their charging points are. Measuring uptime - the percentage of time a charging station is operational - is therefore crucial, but inconsistently reported. Our latest paper lays out what policymakers need to know about uptime and how the industry is being proactive. What are the benefits from building a common methodology for measuring uptime? 🥇 Incentivizing CPOs to provide a better service: A methodology based on no exemptions recognizes that the CPO, while not necessarily responsible for all causes of downtime, is responsible for fixing the problem. 🌍 Consistency across the industry: A shared methodology ensures that all CPOs are compared from the same baseline, without the distortions caused by different definitions or exemption policies. 🪟 Transparency & simplicity: By using existing error codes and standardized protocols, a common methodology minimizes human error and provides a cleaner, more accurate measurement of uptime without inflating percentages. A common methodology would foster a level playing field while driving CPOs to achieve the best possible uptime, ultimately improving the EV charging experience for all drivers. 🚨 The European Commission's State of the Energy Union 2024 is out🚨 It highlights some critical points that will define the EU's path to achieving its 2030 climate and energy targets, many of which will have direct impacts on the #EVcharging industry: 🔌 €584 billion investment by #2030: The EU needs €584 billion in total investments, with €375-425 billion dedicated to distribution grids - great news for EV charging, where poor grid connections are the number 1 bottleneck in effective rollout! 🚗 Transport #decarbonization is on track for 2030 targets: Progress is strong, but the pace must accelerate. The EU needs to maintain ambition on electrification while tackling grid connection challenges. 🗝️ Implementation is key: Effective implementation of the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) will be crucial. Member States should focus on delivering the goals of the Electricity Market Design (EMD) to ensure a stable, affordable, and clean energy market. ⚡ Renewable energy & EV charging: Renewable energy growth and EV charging go hand in hand. Grid expansion and modernization are essential for integrating renewables and electrifying transport. ⚙️ Flexibility: Enhancing flexibility in power systems and electricity markets is key to integrating renewable energy sources. At this stage, an effective national-level implementation is now critical. Now let’s see what’s in store from next week’s State of the Union address!
