📈 ChargeUp Europe Board: the EV outlook today 📈 The Board of ChargeUp Europe, the voice of the EV charging infrastructure industry, met on October 1, and discussed the EV outlook. The Board is of the view that: ⚡ The current slowdown in EV sales in Europe is a bump in the road and does not change the direction of travel. This bump is temporary in nature, driven by slowdown in select markets.  Exempting the German market, EV sales grew by 9% in H12024. ⚡ The EV charging industry continues to invest heavily in expanding both public and private charging infrastructure. We anticipate that EV charging infrastructure deployment will outpace EV uptake in 2024. ⚡ Electric drivetrains are the superior technology and highly energy efficient. There is no better technology to provide an excellent automotive experience and reduce emissions in the light duty vehicle parc.  ⚡ Policy stability and predictability drives investments decisions. Legal certainty, including the 2035 phaseout of tailpipe emissions, is critical and must be preserved. ⚡ The answer to the current sales slump is not to shield Europe from competition, but to increase volumes. Measures that support improved EV volumes – together with the development of a broader offer of makes and models of EVs at different price points to serve more, varied customers - will allow EU carmakers to scale, strengthening them against their foreign competitors. ⚡ E-mobility is an economic opportunity for Europe. In 2023, already 50 000 people were working in the EV charging sector alone, up from 13 000 in 2019 – and more jobs will be created in the future. ChargeUp Europe will unveil additional macroeconomic data on 15/10 showing the value and job creation in the sector for the next decade. ⚡ Transport electrification remains a dynamic and innovative sector. Our companies are full of people solving interesting puzzles and improving customer experience. The electrified transportation system is taking shape in front of our eyes, and we’re excited to keep working on it. Our Q3 Board meeting in Lisbon had everything. Brazilian art and dinner with a Minister. A Tuk Tuk ride and irresistible Portuguese hospitality. The past and the future, with a former coal plant visit and a smart charging demo. “The transition will not happen at a pace at which it needs to happen if all actors do not commit” This is what our Policy Director, Gabrielė Šimakauskaitė, emphasized yesterday at the Conference on the EU Automotive Ecosystem, hosted by the #HU24EU alongside European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). During the panel on "Accelerating E-Mobility in the EU: Key Priorities and Challenges," Gabriele dove into ChargeUp Europe's vision for scaling recharging infrastructure across the EU, highlighting the importance of legal certainty for the competitiveness of the EU’s industry, sparking a dynamic discussion on the future of transport. ⚡ We thank the Hungarian Presidency for organizing this high-level event. We were pleased to strengthen our relationships with key industry players and EU decision-makers.

As the #EVcharging industry grows, EV drivers need to be able to drive confidently - and a lot of that comes from being able to charge reliably. Uptime is a key metric for providers to track how reliable their charging points are. Measuring uptime - the percentage of time a charging station is operational - is therefore crucial, but inconsistently reported. Our latest paper lays out what policymakers need to know about uptime and how the industry is being proactive. What are the benefits from building a common methodology for measuring uptime? 🥇 Incentivizing CPOs to provide a better service: A methodology based on no exemptions recognizes that the CPO, while not necessarily responsible for all causes of downtime, is responsible for fixing the problem. 🌍 Consistency across the industry: A shared methodology ensures that all CPOs are compared from the same baseline, without the distortions caused by different definitions or exemption policies. 🪟 Transparency & simplicity: By using existing error codes and standardized protocols, a common methodology minimizes human error and provides a cleaner, more accurate measurement of uptime without inflating percentages. A common methodology would foster a level playing field while driving CPOs to achieve the best possible uptime, ultimately improving the EV charging experience for all drivers. We know there is a lot of work coming ahead, especially regarding implementation and competitiveness, but we are excited about what lies ahead and are ready to collaborate with anyone who shares our goals, drive and mindset!
