Justice starts with children!
About us
CFJ-EN envisions justice systems in Europe to be adapted to the specificities of children: their particular needs, capacities and vulnerabilities. The CFJ-EN aims at accelerating the concrete and effective adaptation of justice systems to children in Europe by providing every actor involved in children’s proceedings a range of specific activities focusing on children’s rights, access to justice for children, child participation, child friendly justice principles as enshrined in the Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC), the Council of Europe Guidelines on Child friendly justice and the EU acquis including the EU Strategy on the rights of the child. The Child Friendly Justice European Network (CFJ-EN) was officially established in April 2019 by Defence for Children International Belgium (DCI-Belgium) and currently has 29 member organisations and individuals in 19 countries.

This recent UNICEF article highlights a stark reality: half of all children in Europe and Central Asia are exposed to frequent heatwaves, double the global average. With heatwaves set to increase in frequency and intensity, urgent measures are needed to protect children from the severe health risks associated with heat stress. The upcoming CFJ-EN Annual Seminar on October 10-11, organised in partnership with Terre des hommes foundation, CICS.NOVA.UMinho - Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais, and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, will delve into how climate change pressures justice systems and explore ways to guarantee children's access to justice. This conference aims to foster dialogue and exchange knowledge on transforming justice systems to better meet children's needs and rights. Join us in this critical conversation by registering for the Annual Seminar: https://lnkd.in/eWnynh4t Read the full UNICEF article here: https://lnkd.in/dFkxaM2N #ClimateAction #ChildrensRights #Heatwaves #ClimateJustice #UNICEF #CFJEN2024

We at the Child Friendly Justice European Network (CFJ-EN) welcome the Scottish government's recent announcement that no more under-18s will be kept in young offenders institutions by early September. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic death of 17-year-old Jonathan Beadle at Polmont Young Offenders Institution. His story underscores the urgent need for reform in how we treat young offenders. This change marks a significant step towards a more compassionate and protective approach for vulnerable youth in Scotland. #YouthJustice #Scotland https://lnkd.in/euKbx8dZ

🏴 Scotland incorporates UN children's rights charter into law 🏴 This marks a significant step forward in protecting and empowering children. The act mandates that all public authorities in Scotland, including the government, must protect the rights of children and young people, consider these rights in policy decisions, and ensure it is illegal to violate UNCRC requirements. https://lnkd.in/eANZNGZM #ChildRights #UNCRC #Scotland

Last week, Lotte Buekenhout, our Advocacy Officer, participated in a roundtable organised by Passerell Luxembourg. The event brought together four speakers to discuss how to protect child victims of gender-based violence in the context of migration and asylum (LEILAW project). The speakers aimed to highlight challenges they encountered in the field. Lotte emphasised that: 👧 The presumption of minority must be respected. In other words, in cases where there is doubt about the age of a victim, authorities should err on the side of caution and treat the individual as a child until proven otherwise. 🌐 Child protection requires an integrated approach. 🤝 We need proactive support from governments, asylum authorities, and professionals working with children to ensure their rights are respected. 👓 It takes cultural understanding to truly grasp the intersectionality between migration, gender-based violence, and being a child. We should stop assessing their situations through a Western lens. 🎯 We need a victim and child-centred approach. ⚖️ The principle of the best interests of the child must be genuinely applied. It should be the primary consideration in any decision affecting a child Read how our member DEI Belgique worked on the topic for 2.5 years through its BRIDGE project (2018-2020): https://lnkd.in/em5J5fPt
