The European Parliament’s ITRE committee held its constitutive meeting this week, officially kicking off its work on the new mandate. Congratulations to MEP Borys Budka for being elected as ITRE’s chair, as well as to all the vice-chairs! Carbon Free Europe looks forward to working with ITRE members to foster a successful Clean Industrial Deal. #EP2024 #EU #Energy #CleanIndustry #NetZero

Galvanising support in Europe for an ambitious decarbonisation agenda that includes every carbon-free energy technology
About us
Carbon-Free Europe (CFE) was launched by Third Way’s Climate and Energy program at COP26 to build international support for a technology-inclusive climate agenda and encourage governments to maximise the next decade to meet climate goals. With a presence in Brussels, EU Member States, the UK, and Washington, DC, CFE facilitates transatlantic collaboration on climate policy, innovation, and clean energy supply chains. CFE conducts research to ensure policymakers and the climate community have access to comprehensive, robust analyses to make evidence-based decisions on net-zero strategies. As part of this, we assess the risks and tradeoffs of different net-zero pathways to advise governments on credible trajectories to 2050. CFE advocates for technology-inclusive climate policies, which are essential for deep decarbonisation and to reduce Europe’s vulnerability to volatile energy prices. We also provide expert insights on contemporary issues, including the EU’s Green Deal, national energy and climate plans, and Europe’s energy security.

Congratulations to Ursula Von der Leyen her reelection as European Commission President. Her support for a balanced Green Deal will be crucial to ensuring the EU meets its net-zero goals, while remaining competitive on the global stage. Notably, her political guidelines announce a new Clean Industrial Deal and reiterate her commitment to a 90% emission-reduction target by 2040. Have a look at our analysis on how the EU can reach this 2040 target here: https://lnkd.in/eSDAS8Th Carbon Free Europe looks forward to collaborating with the new Commission to ensure the EU reaches net-zero and secures long-term energy security. #EU #Commission #Energy #NetZero

The deadline for EU countries to submit their National Energy and Climate Plans was over two weeks ago – but several countries have yet to submit plans to meet the EU’s ambitious 2030 climate goals. To get a sense of what plans could look like, we’re looking back at our 2023 EU energy systems modeling, which analyzed different pathways for each EU nation to meet its climate goals and remain competitive in a net-zero future. https://lnkd.in/e_kFSg7P

What we’re reading: Politico’s new primer on the future of nuclear power, renewables, and other policies in France’s new parliament. Our analysis shows nuclear, among other zero carbon technologies, is key to France's net-zero future–and reporter Victor Glaf suggests it could soon get a boost. https://lnkd.in/eMdjWEF8

The very first plenary of the new European Parliament is kicking off today! Newly elected and returning MEPs will have a busy week filled with key votes for the new mandate including that of the EP's President tomorrow and the new Commission's President on Thursday. While concrete legislative work will not resume until after the summer recess, we'll soon know the MEPs in charge of energy and industrial policy, with the appointment of MEPs to their respective committees coming on Friday. Carbon-Free Europe is monitoring developments from Parliament and looking forward to what will surely be an eventful plenary. #EP2024 #EU #Energy #NetZero

22 EU Member States have yet to submit updated National Energy and Climate Plans to the European Commission, a serious blow to the European Union's position as a global climate leader. The EU must use its new mandate to address the logistical, political, and funding obstacles that prevent member states from setting a clear path to reach climate targets. Doing so will not only maintain the European Union's longstanding climate leadership but also provide critical support to strengthen economic competitiveness across member states. https://lnkd.in/eZmGX5Vg

How can the US and Europe work together to deploy more clean energy and meet their climate goals? And how can clean energy industrial strategy help them do so? Carbon-Free Europe joined Third Way Climate and Energy to explore these questions and more in a workshop a few weeks ago. For a read-out, click here: https://lnkd.in/e4JxqtUn

Is Europe’s far-right on the rise? The answer is complicated. Recent EU elections saw gains for the far-right in Europe’s largest economies and losses in the Nordics and elsewhere. For now, the status quo prevails, but the future of the continent’s politics, as well as its climate and energy policies, remains uncertain. Our new blog, written in collaboration with US organisation Third Way Climate and Energy, explores the implications of this year’s EU elections on European climate policy and offers lessons for policymakers committed to protecting Europe’s clean energy future. https://lnkd.in/e86PccJd

As Poland prepares to submit its updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP/KPEiK) to the European Commission, Carbon-Free Europe has conducted an extensive energy systems modelling study on the country’s net-zero economy future. Executed in collaboration with The Silesian University of Technology, Instytut Energetyki - Państwowy Instytut Badawczy, Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, and Evolved Energy Research, the study examines 8 pathways for Poland to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This modelling can help inform the NECP revision as well as Poland’s future policies, national strategies, and long-term investments in net-zero. CFE and its partners considered Poland’s fossil fuel-reliant energy landscape and economy, which presents unique challenges for Poland to meet the EU’s Fit for 55 package emissions reductions targets. The modelling results demonstrate that Poland can reach its net-zero targets by relying on diverse clean energy technologies despite its fossil fuel reliant economy. This includes nuclear energy and carbon management alongside an accelerated renewable deployment. Take a look at the full model results below to learn more about the 8 pathways examined. https://lnkd.in/e866DjyP

Carbon-Free Europe would like to thank our partners for joining our conversation with the Ministerstwo Klimatu i Środowiska (Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment) on Poland’s updated National Energy and Climate Plan #NECP #KPEiK in Warsaw. The event featured insights from Carbon-Free Europe’s new modeling on Poland’s net-zero pathway, completed in partnership with the The Silesian University of Technology, the Instytut Energetyki - Państwowy Instytut Badawczya, and Princeton University’s Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. This research charts multiple pathways for Poland to reach net-zero emissions and can help inform the next net-zero mandate. Stay tuned for modeling updates.
