Daarom delen wij voor World Green Building Week onze realisatie voor GXO Logistics in Tongeren. Met onze expertise in groene bouwtechnieken hebben we een energiezuinig en toekomstbestendig gebouw gerealiseerd dat niet alleen voldoet aan de hoogste normen, maar ook een voorbeeld stelt voor de sector. Dit project onderstreept onze inzet voor een groenere en efficiëntere toekomst. 🌿 Wat maakt dit project bijzonder? ✅ Energiezuinig en fossielvrij: Het gebouw is volledig fossielvrij met geen CO2- of NOx-uitstoot en streeft naar een BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certificering. ✅ Duurzame structuur: De prefab betonstructuur is volledig vervaardigd door C-concrete , terwijl C-fire zorgde voor de brandblussers en veiligheidspictogrammen. ✅ Zonne-energie: Een PV-installatie met 500 kWp zonnepanelen, uitbreidbaar voor toekomstige fases, voorziet in de elektrische voeding. Overschotten worden opgeslagen in een centrale batterij van C-battery, met monitoring door een smart grid gebouwenbeheerssysteem. I found a perfect Battery! Yesterday we met with Bjorn Robbens, CEO at C-battery. And he told me an amazing story of how they designed it. It started with a motorcycle (yes-yes!). They built an electric motorcycle with his brother and tested it at… the Isle of Man TT race! Extreme conditions, perfect environment. Then they took that experience and turned it into battery systems. For logistical developers, rental companies and fast EV chargers. What makes it different? It’s designed to be loved and cherished for a loooong-long time: 1. First life of the battery is 16 years vs 10 years in the market. And even then it still has 80% capacity. That’s a lot! 2. It’s monitored and traced down to each cell. That means if it needs repair, only a cell (few grams) is taken out vs a whole module (up to hundreds of kilos). 3. It’s circular at a cell level too. Cells are taken out, split into different components and sent back for cell manufacturing. That’s a lot less complex, energy intensive and costly vs recycling a whole module! 4. And cherry on top - there is fire protection at the level of each module (vs just a whole system). Meaning fires are tackled at the smallest level before they spread. Making it the easiest system to install indoors too! What stroke me most is C-battery passion for longevity! Building things that last for decades. Then servicing and recycling them into the same systems. Isn’t that what we desperately need in our “throw away” world? #sustainability #energy #innovative

Our recent Sustainability Paradox seminar at Wetenschapspark Universiteit Antwerpen sparked dynamic discussions among visionary leaders. Diving into ecodesign, experts from C-battery, Circular Valley, DEME Group, University of Antwerp, VITO, and in-house teams unveiled strategies for sustainable product development. Initiator and event host Joris emphasizes that ecodesign isn't just a moral duty for future generations, it's a source of innovation and competitive advantage. What you should remember from the event? 💡 1. The butterfly model from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation is a great blueprint for how to get started on circular economies. 2. To compete with traditional business models, you need strong partnerships throughout the entire value chain. 3. Although they require a sizeable investment, product-as-a-service and hybrid business models enable durable product design. 4. Challenge your business in many different sustainability avenues, don't put all your eggs in one basket. 5. Don't forget to think about the end-of-life incentive for the end user since it'll be their responsibility to make the system actually work. Yesterday I attended the "The Sustainability Paradox" seminar organized by Verhaert | Masters in Innovation. Once again I discovered that change and sustainable transformation is driven by people. Passionate people who dare, people who innovate, people with a vision, people who do not give up at the first hurdle, people who inspire and lead others. #Heroesofhope I call them. One of them is Bjorn Robbens who turned the heritage of Maison Saroléa into a 21st electrified brand. Yet he reinvented this innovation path into the birth of C-battery, a circularity driven energy solutions supplier. Within their innovative path they focus on agility, service and optimizing circularity, and they also influence and inspire stakeholders throughout the value chain to make more sustainable choices. A true #fromadroptoaripple story. And at the source of this all passionate people with an eye and brain focused on a better future. Another #heroofhope is Thomas Mueller-Kirschbaum who after his regular career represented Circular Valley, an ecosystem that supports circular start-ups throughout the world. A true valley where economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand. Or Karine Van Doorsselaer who with incredible passion and knowledge leads and inspires future generations to come at the University of Antwerp PO on circular choices.
