Leading engagement on a European circular bioeconomy
About us
The Biobased Industries Consortium or BIC is a European association that was established in 2012 to collectively represent the private sector in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for the Bio-based Industries with the EU - the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). BIC's membership now includes more than 200 member companies (large and small) and includes growing representation from new actors engaged in the bioeconomy across the full value chain e.g. brand owners. BIC also has around 165 associate members including Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs), universities, European associations and organisations. Technology Platforms (ETPs), public institutions, regional organisations and private banks. It is also host to a unique mix of sectors from agri-food, marine and aquatic, technology providers, the forest and paper-based sector, chemicals and materials, waste, energy and brand owners.

Today we have published "European Bioeconomy in Figures 2008-2021", the next edition in a series of in-depth reports we commission from the nova-Institut GmbH. The report contains a detailed breakdown of how the different bioeconomy sectors in the 27 EU Member States, and the bio-based industries, contribute to the EU's overall economy. This particular report covers the height of the COVID-19 pandemic https://lnkd.in/eJcU_qea

The circular bioeconomy is critical for achieving a climate-neutral, sustainable, resilient and competitive Europe ✅ It can also help to promote an “environment conducive to innovation and business”, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen describes. BIC is one of 13 associations to have signed a Joint Statement recommending the European Commission adopt a consistent approach in carbon modeling when it comes to biogenic carbon and the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF). The accounting methodology established in PEF will have a profound effect on the recognised benefits of transitioning away from fossil feedstock in products https://lnkd.in/eJAXST8b ACV, APAG - Oleochemicals Europe, Cefic, CEPE, Cepi, EFCC - European Federation for Construction Chemicals, European Panel Federation, European Bioplastics, The International Fragrance Association (IFRA), FEICA, Plastics Europe & Renewable Carbon Initiative

According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Europe is aiming to become “a technological and industrial powerhouse”. How can the bioeconomy and bio-based industries help to make that real? 📣We've identified 5 core principles that should be part of the EU Biotech and Biomanufacturing Initiative: * Make the bio-based industries a strategic sector in Europe within the green and digital transition. * Accelerate Europe's bio-manufacturing capability from lab scale to pilot/demo and from flagships to commercial markets. * Increase supply of sustainable biomass for bio-manufacturing in Europe. * Set incentives and targets for the manufacturing and use of bio-based products and materials. * Properly acknowledge, account for and incentivize the benefits of biogenic carbon, including the adjustment of the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology. https://zurl.co/LmRc
