Make alternatives to animal testing a reality

About us

Altertox was founded in 2012 in Brussels, Belgium and qualifies as a SME (Small Medium Enterprise). Altertox supports the development of scientist 2.0 in life sciences by 1) making people better scientists 2) making scientists better people and 3) making scientists voice heard. Under the first pillar, “making people better scientists”, Altertox has an expertise in organizing training activities in laboratories focusing on new biotech tools exclusively in vitro and in silico methods in Europe on alternatives to animal testing. This activity - started in 2016 - connects experts from Europe and the U.S. to provide hands-on training in human-relevant alternative methods and technologies for toxicologists at all levels of experience, from entry level technician (BS) to laboratory or department manager (MS/PhD/Postdoctoral Fellows). Among customers and partners, Altertox has worked for ECHA, EFSA, BASF, epithelix or MIMETAS. The topics ranged from PBPK modelling to in silico methods such as read-across and in vitro EDC level 1 and 2 tools. Under the second pillar “making scientists better people”, Altertox also organizes a training activity called Skills4Science. Last, “making scientists voice heard”, Altertox is involved in public affairs since 2012 to lobby on 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement) issues on behalf of CAAT-Europe in particular with the European Parliament. As a consequence, Altertox is part of the EU transparency register 400309213564-96 where all information and files advocated by Altertox can be searched. Moreover, this know-how is transfered since 2018 to scientists at the European Commission Joint Research Center via two-days trainings to learn about “informed evidence to policy makers”. This activity will run until end of 2020. In addition, Altertox Academy organizes scientific conference in Europe with innovative set-up and collaborative approaches to ensure best educative experience for the participants.

🚀 ALTERTOX 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝘀 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲-𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻! 🚀  Today we’re exploring the 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 of #NAMs for the future of research & animal welfare. NAMs are not just a trend — they represent a paradigm shift in scientific inquiry. 🔬 Here’s why :  🎯 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 & 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 📚️ Recent studies demonstrate that NAMs, including 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘳𝘰 assays 🔬🧫 & computational models 🖥️, provide data more directly applicable to human biology, enhancing the accuracy & relevance of research findings compared to traditional animal models. 💡 This is because NAMs are designed to mimic human biological processes more closely.  📖 Research published in 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘋𝘳𝘶𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 highlights that NAMs can significantly enhance the predictive accuracy of human responses to drugs and chemicals (Peters et al., 2023).  ⚖️ This precision is vital for regulatory applications, & the readiness of certain NAMs becomes evident as organizations like the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) increasingly accept NAMs as valid alternatives to animal testing. European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is also exploring opportunities to include more NAMs in the regulatory safety assessment of chemicals.  This is paving the way for broader adoption of these methodologies in various scientific fields. 🗺️ 💹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰, 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 & 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀  💰 Traditional animal testing is both resource-intensive and costly.   In contrast, NAMs can offer a more economical alternative, streamlining testing processes while aligning with the #3Rs principle (Replace, Reduce, Refine).  By prioritizing humane practices, NAMs minimize animal suffering & resonate with societal expectations for ethical research. 🌱 Adopting NAMs also contributes to reducing the ecological footprint of research. With fewer animals needed, the environmental impact associated with housing, feeding, & waste disposal diminishes significantly, promoting a more sustainable approach to scientific inquiry.  🔎 To explore these advancements further, join the 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 on NAMs in Biomedical Research hosted by @The Johns Hopkins University Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) on Nov. 19, 2024.  ➡️ https://loom.ly/DLdqIjA It will focus on the economic benefits & ethical implications of NAMs, providing valuable insights for researchers committed to animal welfare and sustainable practices. 🚀 ALTERTOX 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲-𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻! 🚀 Hey Animal Researchers in Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Medical Sciences! 👩🔬👩🏾🔬 In our last post of the 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, we introduced the concept of New Approach Methodologies (#NAMs).  Today, let’s dive deeper. 🔍 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝘀? NAMs encompass a variety of cutting-edge technologies and approaches, including in vitro methods 🔬, computational models 🖥️, and high-throughput screening techniques📈. These methods are designed to predict human and environmental responses more accurately than traditional animal tests. Think of NAMs as a 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗚𝗣𝗦 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵.  Their mechanistic information provides precise 🎯 directions and help you reach your destination efficiently, all while minimizing animal use.  Just as a GPS guides you efficiently, NAMs guide your research with innovative tools and techniques that reduce reliance on animal testing. 🐁🐇  They can help you navigate complex scientific questions with great accuracy and relevance to human health 🧬 and the environment🌏. For example, 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗛𝗧𝗦) techniques allow rapid testing of a large number of compounds for biological activity. Imagine quickly testing thousands of potential drug candidates within a few weeks! 🧪⚡ Here's a recent study that explicitly demonstrates the rapid screening capabilities of HTS. In this study, researchers screened a library of over 100,000 compounds against the main protease of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19).  Using HTS techniques, they were able to identify several promising inhibitors within a matter of weeks.
