📌 Ferroglobe PLC’s CEO, Marco Levi, has participated in the Antwerp Dialogue on Trade, hosted by AEGIS Europe and industriAll Europe in Brussels, focused on the future of an effective trade policy preventing further deindustrialization in Europe and combating massive overcapacities worldwide. The Antwerp Dialogue addressed crucial topics around the need for a robust EU trade policy to safeguard against economic distortions and ensure a level playing field for European industries. Some of them included: 🔵 The impact of geopolitical, economic, and environmental challenges on European manufacturing. 🔵 The urgent need for an Open Strategic Autonomy to ensure a competitive and resilient EU. 🔵 The significant threats posed by unfair competition, particularly from non-market excess capacities in China. 🔵 The necessity for robust trade defense rules and a targeted industrial policy to secure Europe’s industrial future. 🗣 During his intervention, Marco Levi emphasized that “excess capacities in non-EU countries, especially in the silicon metal sector, distort the market and suppress prices, causing financial instability for EU producers. Therefore, we need stronger trade defense mechanisms to protect the EU market and ensure fair competition”. Yesterday, we participated in the Antwerp Dialogue on shaping an effective trade policy to combat deindustrialisation in Europe and address global overcapacities, organised by AEGIS Europe and industriAll Europe! 🌍💼 A special thanks to Norsk Hydro and Bruno D'hondt for representing our industry! Addressing overcapacity is of crucial importance for the European #aluminium industry as subsidised industrial overcapacity in China poses a fundamental threat to our sector. Over the past few decades, China's non-market practices have created an unfair playing field. Their use of subsidies and low pricing has led to a surge of Chinese products in our markets, lowering the competitiveness of European producers. For aluminium, overcapacity began a few years ago in the primary segment and has since extended to semi-transformation and recycling. Today, it also impacts several finished products containing aluminium, such as #BEVs and #solar panels. Chinese overcapacity for semi-finished aluminium products is equivalent to three times the entire EU demand for these products. ✅Our key messages included: 🔹 A pragmatic approach to EU trade defence is essential. This includes initiating more ex-officio cases, assertively implementing existing EU Trade Defence Instruments (TDIs) and preventing the circumvention of trade measures. 🔹 Developing additional measures, such as tariffs, is necessary to counteract unfair trade practices, especially those originating from non-market economies. 📄Want to know more about our stance on overcapacity? 📢 AEGIS Europe urges the EU to act against excessive non-market capacities threatening EU manufacturing. 🌍 The G7 summit recognized the need for effective tools against this issue, but diplomatic talks aren't enough. Immediate and robust EU action is essential. Our Asks: 👉 Immediate recognition that economically irrational and non-market excess manufacturing capacities undermine the EU’s competitiveness and the need to restore a level playing field and encourage future investments; 👉 Introduce legislation to impose punitive tariffs or equivalent measures at the borders; 👉 Relax injury requirements in trade defence investigations for the affected sectors; 👉 Include provisions in EU FTAs allowing the EU to counteract. 📢 SEA Europe supports AEGIS Europe's feedback on the revision of the Foreign Direct Investment Screening Regulation recently proposed by the European Commission. This proposal aims to ramp up the existing foreign direct investment screening mechanisms in order to preserve Europe’s strategic autonomy and ensure a global competitive level playing field.🌐 ➡ SEA Europe joins forces with AEGIS Europe to call for an enlargement of the scope of the Regulation to the Maritime Technology Industry, which covers commercial and naval shipyards and their supply chain of maritime systems, equipment and services.⚓ 🚨 The Maritime Technology Industry is of particular importance for the security or public order interests of the Union as it builds, equips and maintains naval capabilities that are paramount for preserving Europe's strategic autonomy, defending its maritime borders, and securing its critical maritime and underwater infrastructure. 📍 Building and maintaining advanced naval military assets require a strong industrial value chain in commercial shipbuilding. Indeed, commercial and military shipbuilding are closely connected, sharing up to 70% of materials, supply chains, jobs, and skills. 📍 Because military orders mainly come from governments, it is important for the shipbuilding industry to maintain its capacities, jobs, supply chains, and know-how with a critical mass of commercial orders. Therefore, preserving a thriving European maritime technology industry is a critical security concern.
