ACI EUROPE would like to congratulate Eliza Vozemberg on her election as Chair of the Transport and Tourism (TRAN) Committee in the European Parliament. For the next 2 and a half years, she will chair the Committee dedicated to facilitating connectivity across Europe and allowing citizens and goods to move freely and easily across Europe. The Committee works on a range of vital aviation topics, including the Fit for 55 package, and the Single European Sky. ACI EUROPE looks forward to working closely with Eliza Vozemberg on highlighting the importance of Europe’s airports, and working on a path that satisfies the twin objectives of both decarbonising aviation whilst protecting the notable benefits airports present socially, economically, as well as in terms of connectivity. We would also like to congratulate the newly elected Vice-Chairs of the Committee: Virginijus Sinkevičius, Sophia Kircher, ELENA KOUNTOURA, and Matteo Ricci. We wish this Bureau the best of luck with their ongoing work!

Presenting to the Board of Directors of Athens International Airport yesterday - reviewing trading conditions & future determinants, key challenges ahead and strategies to future-proof the airport business. Always interesting to exchange with shareholders, as attracting private capital remains vital for airports to be able to deliver on sustainable air connectivity. It was of course special to do this in Athens 🇬🇷 - given the long-standing involvement and support of CEO Yiannis Paraschis and his great teams to ACI EUROPE - not to mention their always progressive positioning on sustainability and current track record in terms of traffic. This is truly an airport positioned as a role model well beyond our sector, especially considering the role it has played for the economic renewal of Greece post the sovereign debt crisis. Special thanks to Athens International Airport ‘s Chairman Michail Kefalogiannis and Vice-Chairman Gerhard Schroeder from AviAlliance GmbH

ACI EUROPE is pleased to share that the CLEAN ATM 2 and the GREEN CNS initiatives, both prepared and coordinated by SESAR Deployment Manager (SDM), were selected as the two Air Traffic Management-related projects to receive funding in response to the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Transport Call for proposals 2023. The two multi-stakeholder initiatives are set to receive over €140 million of EU public funding, under the CEF, the main instrument established by the European Union to support and accelerate strategic transport investments. ACI EUROPE has supported airports every step of the way, through our participation in the SDM. As a result of ACI EUROPE’s efforts to bring airports together to create multi-stakeholder applications, 12 airports will now receive over €69 million from 2024-2027 in funding against the investment of nearly €140 million. The airports are mainly involved in two projects that will cover a variety of topics all aimed at optimising the use of airspace and improving operational resilience, including the reduction of congestion, delays and unnecessary emissions through the Extended Airports Operations Plan and its connection to the network, as well as the adoption of standards, protocols and services that will further digitalise operations. With the next EU political cycle beginning in earnest, the role of EU funding cannot be understated. The twin objectives of decarbonising aviation and preserving air connectivity will require accompanying investments through appropriate EU financial instruments. As noted in our ‘Airport Industry Manifesto for the Next EU Political Cycle (2024-2029)’, ongoing EU financial support to SESAR Research & Development as well as Deployment in the next multi-annual financial EU framework is essential, particularly through CEF and Horizon. ⭐ We look forward to collaborating through these initiatives in the coming years! 🌟 Exciting news! The CLEAN ATM 2 and GREEN CNS initiatives, coordinated by the #SESAR Deployment Manager, have been selected to receive over €140 million in EU public funding under the CEF Transport Call for proposals 2023. 🛫 These multistakeholder initiatives are a crucial step for the #modernisation of #ATM in #Europe, as they contribute both to Common Project 1 deployment and to CNS infrastructure evolution. 💰 These projects are set to mobilize almost € 300 million of investments in the next five years, and they add up to the € 2.7 billion portfolio of projects already coordinated by #SDM. 🔊 Mariagrazia La Piscopia, Executive Director at the SESAR Deployment Manager, said: “We welcome the excellent outcomes of our submission for the CEF Call 2023, a new milestone in the SDM task to support the stakeholders’ community in their #ATM #modernisation efforts. These awarding results represent further proof that the Partnership we established – with stakeholders willing and committed to join forces and work together – is delivering critical results and helping to build the ATM industry of the future”. #SESARdelivers #AsOne #aviation #CP1 #EU CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency European Commission

👉 I am impressed and read with great interest the latest ACI Airport Council International - European Region of the Airports Council International #connectivity #2024 report, written with SEO Amsterdam Economics. 👉 The #methodology has been updated. The results now give an excellent overview of the 'state of affairs' and ranking of the European countries' direct, indirect, and total connectivity for passenger traffic. ➡️ Some striking observations: 🔝 Europe's top 5 best-connected countries are - not surprisingly - #UnitedKingdom, #Germany, #Spain, #Italy and #France. Even without a strong home carrier, #Italy keeps the fourth place. 🇧🇪 #Belgium, the capital of the European Union and home of NATO, is only 16th in total air connectivity within Europe. The underperformance of Brussels Airport related to passenger connectivity is one of the reasons behind this. Brussels South Charleroi Airport's strategic focus on point-to-point low-cost traffic cannot counterbalance the lack of connectivity in Belgium. Urgent action to increase Belgium's air connectivity is required to maintain Belgium's key position as a political and international hub. Smaller countries like #ireland, #danmark, and #austria have better connectivity, demonstrating that active strategic management, in cooperation with the respective governments, bears fruit. A tough job ahead for the next governments and SFPIM. ➡️ Zooming in on the individual #European #airports, the 2024 results show winners and underperformers compared to 2023, 2019 and 2014. 👉 Due to the consistent growth track record, obvious #winners are number 1 iGA Istanbul Airport, no. 9 Aeroporti di Roma (FCO), no. 10 Palma de Mallorca—Aena (PMI), no. 12 Athens International Airport, no. 18 #Lisbon ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal, SA (LIS) and no. 27 #Malaga Airport (AGP). The reasons behind this growth are diverse: an expanding home carrier like Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways or Aegean Airlines, an accommodating and expansive airport management or governmental policy, the fast-rising leisure traffic or a combination of these factors. 👉 Consistent #underperformers in direct connectivity in the last ten years are no.23 Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), no. 28 Brussels Airport (BRU), and no. 29 Düsseldorf Airport (DUS). Restructuring home carriers Brussels Airlines and SAS - Scandinavian Airlines is one reason behind BRU and ARN's underperformance, shareholders' objectives another. The bankruptcy of airberlin and the closure of Lufthansa's long-haul base are a few reasons why DUS struggles with connectivity. ✈️ The report (with Excel annexes) can be downloaded free of charge through this link: https://lnkd.in/eM3QaaFD. Last week, we did not just reconfirm the commitment of Europe’s airports to Net Zero by 2050 at the latest (https://shorturl.at/Pjyt4). We published the roadmaps towards Net Zero developped by 303 airports across 36 countries on our ACI EUROPE repository (https://shorturl.at/4ZtyE). This is truly meaningful: 1. It shows our industry commitment is not just words on a piece of paper - it is about concrete action. 2. It brings Europe’s airports in line with the United Nations Guidance on Net Zero pledges, which recommends that net zero commitments should be backed by publicly disclosed and actionable plans. So many thanks to all our member airports for supporting us in this collective disclosure - which is quite unprecedented. For most of these airports, their commitment and roadmaps are underpinned by their certification under Airport Carbon Accreditation. While our industry commitment is primarily focused on those emissions directly controlled by airports - scopes 1&2, it acknowledges the imperative to also address emissions facilitated by airports - scope 3, in particular those from aircraft using our facilities. For that, certification requirements under Airport Carbon Accreditation have evolved over time. The higher certification levels now require airports to fully map their scope 3 emissions and to actively engage with their stakeholders to reduce them. We will of course keep the programme’s requirements under constant review - with the support and guidance of its Advisory Board members from UN Climate Change | International Civil Aviation Organization | European Commission | Federal Aviation Administration | EUROCONTROL | European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) | Manchester Metropolitan University Business School | Aviation Environment Federation
