Cumeri is a Horizon Europe project aiming at demonstrating innovative membrane technologies in two industrial processes: gas separations in the steel industry (CO2 and H2) and the replacement of distillation by membrane filtration in the petrochemical industry. For the latter, the re-refining of used lubricants (motor oil) has been selected. High viscosity used lubricant oil will be treated with a combination of different membrane-technologies to end up with re-refined lube base oil and roofing products in a process that is both economically and environmentally (CO2 emissions) more interesting. Membrane filtration will happen at high temperatures with grafted ceramic membranes. The very stable grafting of organic groups adapts the ceramic surface to match the process requirements. Affinity membrane filtration at its best!
