  • 🎉 We have launched our Biomanufacturing Incubator, aimed at pairing cell biologists who work across vascular systems, facial reconstruction, eyesight, dentistry and diabetes with bioprinting experts to plug them into a “biomanufacturing way of thinking”.    The multidisciplinary initiative aims to unify areas around University of Sydney already independently working in the field and will be led by cardiovascular bioengineer Professor Steven Wise and biomedicine researcher Khoon Lim.   “If you’re going to move towards making an off-the-shelf pancreas or a place where beta cells can grow and cure diabetes, you need engineers and chemists, but you also need the best diabetes people,” said Professor Wise.   Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gYGfKtaw #LeadershipForGood #Incubator

  • Congratulations to Dr Dongang Wang and Dr Geng Zhan on being named recipients of the MS Australia Incubator grant, an award designed to test novel concepts in multiple sclerosis (MS) research.   Both are building on Dr Geng’s primary PhD research into using large language models to predict MS disease progression.   The progression of disability in MS is complex and difficult to predict, particularly over short timeframes.   There is still a lack of biological signs (biomarkers) that can accurately predict the progression of MS, which hinders the implementation of individualised MS treatment plans.    This research aims to develop a tool that can be easily implemented to facilitate early tailored treatment and improve long-term clinical outcomes.   Find out more about this project: https://lnkd.in/gmy_-NA9 #LeadershipForGood Brain and Mind Centre

  • Congratulations to Professor Ramon Z. Shaban who has received funding from the Australian Government's National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for research into improving infection prevention and control (IPC) in aged care homes. Professor Shaban has been awarded $745K for his project aimed at establishing standards for the governance, program elements and practice of infection prevention and control in residential aged care in Australia.   “Aged care standards require all residential aged care homes (RACHs) to appoint a designated infection control professional (ICP),” explains Professor Shaban.   “Our work supports this mandate by developing the evidence base for infection prevention and control in RACHs.   “We will establish standards for the essential elements and governance arrangements for IPC programs in RACHs, and the practice and competency for ICPs in RACHs.”   This project is part of the NHMRC’s Targeted Call for Research (TCR): Improving infection prevention and control in residential aged care homes 2023 scheme that aims to develop a solid evidence base to inform how existing measures and practices can be adapted to suit the unique environment of residential aged cares homes.   Find out more about Dr Ramon Shaban: https://lnkd.in/g3s-FVJk

  • Eight final year Bachelor of Nursing students undertook their two-week community nursing placement in Phnom Penh, Cambodia last month. 🇰🇭 Our students collaborated with students from the University of Puthisastra, exchanging information about their respective countries, healthcare systems, and nursing schools through presentations and group discussions. They were also given the opportunity to tour the nursing school, participate in clinical skills laboratories, and learn about Cambodia’s culture and history. Throughout the placement, our students provided over a hundred child health checks at New Smile of Hope orphanage and two different primary schools. They also prepared and provided health education to large groups of children and adults at Cambodian Children's Fund housing and the Children’s Restaurant which provides meals for homeless children. An incredibly transformative learning opportunity and experience for our nursing students! #SydneyNursingSchool
