Meet the finalists of the Innovation Leadership Award 2024! These exceptional leaders who have not only mastered the art of innovation but have also driven their teams to achieve remarkable success. They are the backbone of their companies and communities, blending visionary thinking with meticulous execution to create impactful products and services. Please join us in celebrating: Lauren Barber (MACN, CNS), a former clinical nurse turned entrepreneur, founded NeedleCalm and developed a Class One medical device that reduces pain during injections, helping the one-in-four Australians who fear needles. Her ability to identify unmet needs in the health care industry and translate them into groundbreaking solutions has been remarkable. Professor Rowena Barrett, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Entrepreneurship and Regional Innovation at QUT, has been pivotal in fostering an entrepreneurial culture through successful programs and strategic partnerships with entities like MIT and the Office of Queensland Chief Entrepreneur, which she helped establish. Known for her visionary thinking and deep empathy for regional Queensland, she believes that all Queenslanders should have equal opportunities to grow and fulfill their potential regardless of where they live. David Burt was appointed director of entrepreneurship at UNSW in 2020. Since then, he has transformed the Founders Program by expanding the Founder Fund from $240,000 to $4 million annually and increasing support from 12 to 30 startups per year. His leadership has significantly influenced the university's innovation culture. This has helped UNSW earn recognition as Australia’s most entrepreneurial university of the last decade. Dr. Payar Radfar, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Smart MCs, transformed the startup from concept to a global brand specialising in microcarriers and smart biomaterials for large-scale cellular therapy and agriculture. With a PhD from the University of Technology Sydney and expertise in droplet microfluidic systems and biomaterials, his visionary leadership has driven significant strides in the bioprocessing and biomanufacturing industry. Join us for an unforgettable night of innovation & celebration at the InnovationAus.com Awards for Excellence Gala in Sydney. Pro Vice-Chancellor, Entrepreneurship & Regional Innovation at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)
For the last few years I have been coaching the QUT (Queensland University of Technology) #3MT (Three Minute Thesis) finalists. This isn't work. I LOVE it. I get to hear the exciting work the students are doing. I learn more about the students' passion for their research. And most of all I get to see how the students grow through conversations about pitching and the value of their research. It is also an immense pleasure to work with the GRE D team Shastra Deo and Katherine Theobald who contribute great insight to the pitching conversations. I feel like a proud parent watching our finalists' final pitch: Callan Alexander who pitched his research on using AI to eavesdrop on birds in vineyards to help bird conservation. Elise Bray who pitched her work on flexible learning spaces for children on the spectrum and students agency and experiences of these spaces. Lisa Coulburn who pitched the problem of indoor mould found in so many homes which affects residents' quality of life and what policy and practice could fix the issue within 48hrs. Saraniya D. who pitched her research on the effectiveness of sustainable travel influencers in promoting travel that has a positive effect on the environment. Julia Solonenka who pitched the speedy scientific process of creating plant-based vaccine and her work on creating an efficient and cost effective platform to extract pure medicines from the plants. Jessamine Giese who pitched how policy can make teamwork dreamwork in early child care settings. Yasaman Memari pitched her mathematical modelling work to optimise the efficiency of the train network using sensor data that maps the tiny shape-shifting in the rail tracks. Shanshika Maddumage who pitched the effect of smart shoes (cloud platform and mobile app) she is researching that send signals between foot and brain to help people with Parkinson's disease walk and live a better life. Congratulations all - I cannot pick the winner!! People's Choice has chosen Yasaman! Congratulations And the judges have a special acknowledgement for Callan, runner up is Julia and the winner is Shanshika! Woo hoo ....amazing job all! After a guided tour of the Coffee Commune's state-of-the-art facilities in Bowen Hills, hosted by General Manager Raihaan Esat, our students gained valuable insights into critical problem-solving, optimizing workplaces for co-working environments, and business strategies like hiring out equipment to reduce costs. They also learned about the importance of global business connections, effective business management and growth planning, all while enjoying the aroma of freshly roasted coffee! Huge thanks to the Coffee Commune and Raihaan Esat for their time and supporting our efforts to develop future entrepreneurs!!

Applications for a new group of QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Budding Entrepreneur Scholars will be open soon! #OpenDay #University #Study
Pro Vice-Chancellor, Entrepreneurship & Regional Innovation at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)
So proud of what the QUT Entrepreneurship Budding Entrepreneur Scholars can achieve. On Saturday I went to Lasso, a Country Music Festival (https://lassocmf.com.au) organised by Ashlyn Dinsdale through her Goldstar Entertainment company. Ashlyn is a 1st year student at QUT (Queensland University of Technology) . She curated a lineup of country music artists and groups. They performed to an appreciative multi-age crowd at Distillery Road Market in Eagleby. Fantastic music, great location, enthusiastic line dancing and a wonderful fun event. Anything is possible when you start. And find support. That’s what the Budding Entrepreneur Scholarship does, applications will be open by QUT Open Day (28 July). #entrepreneur #students #fun #university

QUT Entrepreneurship reposted this
Pro Vice-Chancellor, Entrepreneurship & Regional Innovation at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)
This week I’ve been in the FNQ. Cooktown to be precise at the Country Universities Centre (CUC) Study Tour at the invitation of Chris Ronan. Jenni James leads CUC Cooktown and with Tiani and Kerry they provide a fantastic, personal, caring and supportive service to all who are studying in the region. They are well supported by a board led by Cr Marilyn (Maz) Morris, Deputy Mayor Cook Shire. The plans are big and the execution exemplary. Robina Xavier and I were grateful for the hospitality and generousity of all on the study tour in sharing the ambition for CUCs. We learned a lot through the conversations with others about the ways we can all work together to support students studying in their community. I look forward to ongoing and deep engagement with the CUCs and all the Regional University Study Hubs and returning soon to Cooktown! #students #support #engagement
