Yesterday, we hosted our Impact Panel discussion, Virtual Vitality: innovations in healthcare delivery. Facilitated by Dean, Jane Gunn AO, our panellists Professor Elif Ekinci, Director of The Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI), Dr Loren Sher, Program Director for Victorian Virtual Emergency Department, and Geraldine McDonald, Director of Prevention and Wellbeing at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre discussed their work in bringing innovative, patient-centred care to life. 💬 On bringing the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department to life: I'm a fix-it person, and during the pandemic I wanted to find a way to safely treat patients, while managing the demand on the ED system. – Dr Loren Sher. 💬 On the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department Diabetes: Patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes can deteriorate so quickly when waiting for treatment. During COVID a person with diabetes came to see me who said they had been through VVED – the next day I made a call and said, we need to do this for diabetes. – Prof Elif Ekinci. 💬 On healthcare systems: These women are go-getters, they saw a problem and tackled it – we need to ensure that we have environments which allow people to do these incredible things, which support better patient care and better patient outcomes. – Geraldine McDonald.

Type 2 diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia and one of the biggest challenges confronting Australia’s health system. With much already known about how to care for and improve the lives of people living with diabetes, how can we create new, tangible and long-lasting solutions that predict, prevent and reduce the risk of diabetes related complications, improve quality of life and lift the burden on healthcare systems? And how do we ensure new treatments and technologies are available to everyone who needs them, regardless of where they live or their cultural background. Join us for a special Alumni event: Transforming diabetes care – Keeping people living with diabetes healthier for longer. 📆 – Tuesday 6 August ⏰ – 6PM - 8PM 📍 – Ian Potter Auditorium, Kenneth Myer Building, 30 Royal Parade, Parkville Register 👉 https://unimelb.me/3LodHWE

People with disability are more likely to be unemployed, underemployed and working in poorer quality jobs than people without disability, leading to negative mental health outcomes. New research finds that for people with disability, working in a job that's a good match for their skills and needs can improve mental health. But improving the employment landscape for people with disability requires action across four policy areas; ✅ Improving job preparedness ✅ Building effective services ✅ Promoting inclusive workplaces ✅ Creating employment opportunities The time to address the poor employment of people with disability is now 👉 https://unimelb.me/3Ya2uRj #UniMelbPursuit
