Australian Institute of Health Innovation AIHI
Ensuring all Australians diagnosed with cancer receive care in line with the optimal care guidelines is critical for achieving the best outcomes for individuals, families, and the health system. Until now, cancer services have not had an easy to use, evidence based method for systematically auditing adherence to Optimal Care Pathways (OCPs) for quality improvement. A new set of tools produced by researchers from the Australian Institute of Health Innovation AIHI in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson and clinicians from Calvary Mater Hospital is changing that for cancer services and clinicians treating #MultipleMyeloma, #ChronicLymphocyticLeukemia and #MyelodysplasticSyndrome. Cancer services, clinicians and researchers can use the new #MultipleMyeloma, #ChronicLymphocyticLeukemia and #MyelodysplasticSyndrome Optimal Care Pathway Adherence Assessment (OCPAA) Tool to measure variation against the respective OCP and identify areas for local improvement. The tools can also be used to monitor the impact of subsequent quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing the variations from respective OCPs. OCPs are a framework for the delivery of consistent, safe, high-quality, and evidence-based care for people with cancer. As outlined in the Australian Cancer Plan (launched in 2023), OCPs aim to ensure that every Australian diagnosed with cancer receives the best care. OCPs are critical to achieve health equity in cancer control, treatment and management by providing the best care across the continuum of care and putting the patient at the centre of the care. A user guide has also been developed to assist with data collection and application of the tools. The tools and the user guide are freely available to download and use from Australian Institute of Health Innovation webpage. In July, the Endo-MP team submitted recommendations to the Victorian Inquiry into Women's Pain, based on research involving women with endometriosis or chronic pelvic pain (CPP), GPs, and stakeholders across Australia. Key recommendations include raising awareness about endometriosis and CPP, providing clear diagnostic pathways for GPs, enhancing mental health support, and promoting multidisciplinary, patient-centred care. The research highlights issues like symptom dismissal, diagnostic challenges, and healthcare access barriers, emphasising the need for improved diagnosis and management of these conditions.
