Chairman Wayne Hall assures consumers that this season will contrast starkly with the challenges faced in 2023 due to Cyclone Gabrielle's impact on crops in Gisborne, a major citrus-growing region. Benefitting from favorable weather conditions, particularly a hot East Coast summer and conducive growing conditions in Northland, this season promises an abundance of flavorful Satsuma mandarins and Navel oranges. Hall emphasizes the freshness of New Zealand-grown fruits, typically reaching stores within a week of being picked from the trees. Consumers are encouraged to explore diverse ways of incorporating citrus into their diets, including consuming them whole, juicing, adding to salads, or using zest in cooking. Dr. Carolyn Lister from Plant and Food Research highlights the nutritional value of citrus, which is rich in vitamin C and contains essential nutrients like folate and potassium. Additionally, citrus bioactives offer various health benefits, including supporting immunity, cardiovascular health, and brain function. 🇦🇺 ANALYSIS: Australia's September 2024 Beef Exports Drop 6.4% M-o-M; China-Bound Shipments Rise 🥩 📉 Australia’s beef and veal exports fell to 114,046 mt in September 2024, driven by weaker demand from the US, Japan, and Korea. Despite the dip, shipments to China grew as exporters raced to beat the impending safeguard tariff activation. 📈 Annual exports surged by 15.5% on the back of strong production and rising global demand, while YTD volumes climbed 24.5%, nearing the 1 million mt mark. 🌏 Key Market Movements: US-bound exports slipped 9.2%, but remained up 52.3% y-o-y. Exports to Japan dropped 13.1% m-o-m, but YTD growth grew to 28.4%. China-bound shipments rose 6.7% m-o-m but fell 15.2% y-o-y, as China’s safeguard mechanism looms. 📢 GrainGrowers is calling for urgent action from all levels of government to address critical supply chain issues in the lead-up to a bumper chickpea harvest in Queensland, and to support Queensland growers. India’s recent announcement of a tariff-free period for Australian chickpeas until March 2025 has driven a rapid rise in prices, sparking a significant expansion in chickpea production, with forecasts showing a 129% increase this season. In Queensland alone, winter crop production is expected to grow by 94%, reaching 3.3 million tonnes—one of the highest on record. But with this boom comes the challenge of transporting large volumes of chickpeas to port in a short time frame before the end of the tariff-free period. To seize this opportunity, it’s vital that government acts now to address key supply chain bottlenecks. Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is currently consulting on options for export exemptions from New Zealand under the Food Act 2014, to support food exporters to better comply with overseas composition and/or labelling requirements. NZ Food and Grocery Council will be making a submission, if you would like to include your feedback in this, get in touch with us: [email protected]. ➡ Option 1: Maintain the status quo. This option uses section 347 of the Food Act 2014 to continue to provide exemptions on an individual application/case-by-case basis. This approach means each exemption is specific to a particular food exported to a particular market. ➡ Option 2: An exemption in regulations for all food exports from New Zealand standards relating to composition and labelling, with conditions. ➡ Option 3: An exemption in regulations for all food exports from New Zealand standards relating to labelling (no conditions to be met) and composition (with conditions to be met, potentially including where health claims are made or government assurances are required). ➡ Option 4: An exemption in regulations for all food exports, with a differentiated approach for different classes of product or market. For example, foods that are intended for consumption by a higher-risk population group may have some specific conditions that are different from another class of products. This week’s #MPOMilkMinute takes a look at Dairy Imports and Exports (including exports to SACU countries).
