Feeling the Burn: Addressing the Rising Tide of Burnout in the Post-Pandemic Workplace The immediate crisis of the pandemic might be fading, but the specter of burnout looms larger than ever for many workers across Australia. Recent findings reveal alarming rates, with 62% of women and 57% of men reporting moderate to severe burnout levels, surpassing even the highs of 2020. What's driving this surge? Layoff fears, heightened pressure for profitability, and the complex nature of today's workplace are key contributors. To tackle this challenge head-on, leaders are prioritising resilience and psychological safety, recognising that burnout isn't solely an individual's burden. Addressing root causes is paramount. Overwork, lack of autonomy, and diminished community are organisational issues demanding attention. Tina Thornton, AVP of Well-being and Safety at Nationwide, stresses the importance of fostering a culture where mental health discussions are encouraged. Employers wield significant influence over their employees' mental well-being. Burnout not only impacts retention and productivity but also the bottom line. Recognising the signs of burnout is crucial, from diminished trust in management to feelings of being micromanaged or uninformed. Taking proactive steps is essential. Training managers to identify and address burnout, focusing on outcomes rather than hours logged, providing tools for boundary-setting, nurturing social connections, and resetting recovery expectations post-crisis are vital strategies. I saw this great article on Women In Digital reminding us that today is Equal Pay Day - Monday 19 August. This years theme is "it doesn't add up."   This date marks the 50 days into the new financial year that Australian women must work to earn the same, on average, as men did last year.   How is Equal Pay Day calculated? There is a difference of $238 every week and $12,376 every year between the average weekly earnings for men vs. women.
