Case Study: Aalborg taps low carbon energy
The Fifth Estate
In 1973 Denmark’s dependence on imported energy hit an energy shortage crisis and among the responses was a driving ban on Sundays.
The experience galvanised determination to be more self sufficient and energy efficient. Today the town of Aalborg (pictured) is one of many municipalities connected to a zero carbon heating grid that works like a dream, and is an example as to what can be achieved in Australia.

Following development of a community-endorsed Shared Vision and Master Plan, central Dandenong’s transformation is well underway.
Key projects include:
* Lonsdale Street: transformation of the city’s main street into a green, pedestrian-friendly boulevard.
* Stockmans Bridge: a new western entrance into central Dandenong, crossing the railway line and linking Cheltenham Road with the heart of town.
* City Street and Station North Plaza: creating a new, logical and well-lit link between Dandenong Train Station and the heart of town.
* Metro Village 3175: creating more homes within walking distance of the town area.
* Streetscape and road improvements: reducing traffic congestion in central Dandenong while widening and greening pedestrian areas.
Government Services Office: stimulating new office development in central Dandenong and establishing government services in one easily accessible location.
* POP-UP-PARK: establishing a temporary outdoor recreational facility to encourage structured and positive group activity near Dandenong Train Station.
* PRECINCT ENERGY PROJECT: A decentralised heating and electricity generation facility to service immediate developments within central Dandenong. It is the first project of this kind across multiple property titles and owners. On completion, substantial carbon saving would be achieved as low emission (gas fired) electricity is generated and waste heat is capture and utilised. Developers, building owners and tenants enjoy cost savings in trying to achieve 5 Star Green Star rating.Other creatorsSee project
