Central Queensland hydrogen project

Stanwell Corporation, together with its project partners Iwatani, APA Group, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Marubeni and Kansai Electric Power Company, is working to develop a commercial world-scale project to produce and export hydrogen from Gladstone to Japan…
Renewable hydrogen is being heavily promoted around the world for energy storage, and to support the decarbonisation of energy systems. Queensland is well placed for hydrogen export to Asia and is actively working to make this a reality. Stanwell Corporation, together with its project partners Iwatani, APA Group, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Marubeni and Kansai Electric Power Company, is working to develop a commercial world-scale project to produce and export hydrogen from Gladstone to Japan, supporting Japan’s Net Zero by 2050 commitment. The size of the hydrogen production system (3 GW) is significant and as a first of a kind in Queensland raises several technical, regulatory and social challenges. To highlight the scale of the project, the renewable power generation to be installed to support this project will have a capacity equivalent to the current Queensland daily power demand. There are several challenges, one being that solar and wind energy resources by their nature are variable. Identifying and defining the mix of renewable energy to achieve a reliable power supply, and integrating this with the electrolyser systems, will be key to the success of the project. The upgrades required to existing power transmission infrastructure are significant, while additional water supply in the Gladstone region will be required. Finally, recent developments in Gladstone have created a boom–bust cycle and the social acceptance of this development requires ongoing engagement to address community concerns.

In an industry that builds assets to last 50 to 100 years we have to look past electoral cycles and party politics to find a middle path that creates the clarity and certainty to attract the massive investment New Zealand needs to keep the lights on and our economy running over the long term. For years we have been urging all political parties to work closely with the energy sector to develop a bipartisan long term energy strategy, informed by science and economics, designed to see New Zealand through to 2050 and beyond in a way that ensures we balance price, quality, environmental impacts and our nation’s economic viability over time. The realisation that New Zealand is highly likely to build an LNG facility within the next two to three years changes the policy landscape and creates an opportunity for all parties to move to the middle to develop a shared view that will work for all of New Zealand over time. A mixed bag for energy companies in market-land today as things got back to normal. The rising energy prices have put the squeeze on industrial production with Oji Fibre Solutions looking at closing its Penrose factory and Manawa Energy today entered a trading halt while it assessed writing down a customer receivable and weighed the impact of that and tough market conditions on its earnings outlook. Genesis, which has the Huntly backup generation, was the only gentailer to gain today. Meanwhile, unusually heavy trading was in the works for Precinct Properties, while Arvida Group Limited continues to see a lot of action with its takeover pending. There’s still a lot of private equity money sloshing out there and the weak kiwi dollar (which got a wee boost after the slightly better jobs data than expected) makes local firms even more attractive – especially when they’re trading at significant discounts to their net assets. Don’t be surprised if we see a bit more M&A. And while Vista’s attracted a cornerstone stake from Permira, the cinema software firm is getting more upgrades from brokers, which probably helped it lead the NZX 50 higher today. Be interesting to see whether the upcoming The Walt Disney Company report has any clues for global box offices. https://lnkd.in/gmXszX_A

Future Fuels CRC is doing a lot of great work in reducing the levelised cost of energy to produce biomethane from biogas. People refer to the use of biogas as being carbon neutral but it is actually better than that. Even if you electrify everything with nuclear we still have the problem of methane from landfill, sewerage and agriculture which will only increase with an increasing global population. Methane has a Global Warming Potential 28 times that of CO2 over 100 years and 86 times that of CO2 over 20 years. So wake up Australia. It is biomethane plants that are needed and not nuclear.

We support the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC)'s review of network tariff and retail pricing arrangements, because the current state is leading to poor consumer outcomes and is unlikely to remain fit for purpose moving forward. The AEMC's review must: ✅ Be evidence-based. ✅ Be driven by bill outcomes and consumer preferences. ✅ Assess the future drivers and nature of energy system costs. ✅ Consider whether current cost-recovery methods are likely to be fair and appropriate moving forward.
