It's back to school today. (or at least it is for our kids) Millions of students will be experiencing mixed feelings of excitement and trepidation. The same, no doubt, is true for millions more people returning to work after the summer break. September marks the start of the 'golden' quarter, and there is a palpable shift in energy in many organisations as focus shifts from sunny summer vibes to the pressure of hunkering down for the final push of the year. It can be energising. It can be anxiety-inducing. Often, it's a combination of the two. Amy Edmondson's book The Fearless Organisation (which we were excited to discover on our client's bookshelf), unpacks the concept of 'psychological safety' as a critical factor for fostering innovation, learning, and high performance in teams. Creating an environment where people feel safe to 'show up' and 'speak up' (with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes) without fear of retribution or embarrassment is necessary for a culture of collaboration to thrive. In turn, a culture of collaboration is essential for organisations that need teams to work across their functional divides to tackle complex challenges and opportunities in this seemingly all-important final stretch of the year. Let's embrace gentle pressure and commit to showing up today and every day with humility, grace and compassion.

Della Forster, Professor of Midwifery and Maternity Services Research with the Judith Lumley Centre and the Royal Women’s Hospital, has received $999,585 funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council's Targeted Call for Research. Professor Forster’s study examines whether a combination of telehealth and face-to-face visits for antenatal care results in an improved patient experience, and whether it as safe as standard face-to-face care. “Pregnancy is an exciting time, and it can also be a daunting time, with quite a few check-ups needed during pregnancy, and a variety of factors that we need to monitor,” Professor Forster says. “Video health appointments might ease the burden on expectant mothers, but we need to make sure nothing is missed, that women receive the same standard of care virtually, and that an approach like this does not introduce any inequities.” The research will be undertaken at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. The NHMRC Targeted Call for Research funding round aims to identify and understand factors that influence which populations, health conditions and interactions can be effectively managed by telehealth services, and to develop tools and supports that assist health service providers select the most appropriate telehealth services and modalities. The Australian reports that at the 3rd public hearing of the Senate Inquiry into the legislation that will allow for international student caps, the universities appearing outlined the “perverse unintended consequences” of the “arbitrary” formula used to determine the caps at each institution, including fewer nurses in public hospitals and the axing of food banks and study help for domestic students. All universities at the hearing – including Deakin University, the University of Technology Sydney, University of Wollongong, Western Sydney University, Charles Sturt University and Australian Catholic University as well as the university groups Regional Universities Network and Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) – said enrolment limits should be scrapped and the government should start again. They also called for the immediate ending of Ministerial Direction 107. I'll be presenting at the STARS Student Success Conference in Melbourne next week #unistars. I'd love to hear how others are measuring the equity of their initiatives and making their co-curricular programs more inclusive. Presentation title: Your cohort by numbers – mapping equity of participation in co-curricular student experience initiatives. Abstract: Advancing equity is a priority in higher education. As many universities work toward parity in their student cohorts, the University of Queensland (UQ) Faculty of Science Student Experience team is monitoring student participation in co-curricular activities to assess the parity of participation and identify areas for improvement. In this presentation we will share how we collect and analyse these data to improve our programs. We will facilitate discussion about how equity of participation is measured at other institutions and share good practice tips for making co-curricular programs more inclusive.

The Group of Eight CE Vicki Thomson, told The Australian Financial Review in response to Julie Hare’s reporting that overseas student numbers will be capped at 40% based on 2019 numbers – starting Jan 1, 2025 - that the impact of “will be felt across the economy”. “This is not about managed growth because if it were, we would be having a sensible discussion with government about what our international sector should look like,” Ms Thomson said. “This is about base politics. We have been unfairly dragged into the pre-election migration debate. “The very spectre of this legislation is already trashing Australia’s international reputation, it will trash our universities and trash our economy. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 We're excited to announce that funding has been awarded for a new research project that aims to predict which cancer patients treated with taxane chemotherapy are at risk of developing long-term nerve damage (a common problem known as chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, or CIPN). As part of Cancer Australia's Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme (PdCCRS), this Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies project is being led by Chris O'Brien Lifehouse Research Faculty member A/Prof Susanna Park. The funding will enable the team, which includes a number of Chris O'Brien Clinician Researchers, to follow people treated with taxane chemotherapy to identify risk factors predicting the risk of chronic nerve damage. The project will examine genetic factors, lipid factors and proteins related to nerve damage that can be measured in the blood and link these to nerve function assessments. This project will lead to identification of risk profiles to enable better prediction of the risk of nerve damage and lead to improved outcomes following chemotherapy treatment. A big thank you to Cancer Australia and congratulations all investigators involved.
