Legislating how kids use social media is one thing, but it feels we're missing the bigger picture. Here's my How Might We... How might we inspire families and tech companies to co-create safer digital spaces where children thrive, not just survive? Prime Minister Albanese's promise to set a minimum age for kids' access to social media sounds like a step in the right direction. But here’s the thing: laws alone won’t protect our children in the digital age. Yes, it’s the responsibility of tech companies to ensure their platforms are safe for kids, preventing their services from violating children’s rights or exposing them to harm. But we can’t stop there. It’s on the rest of us – parents, educators, communities – to step up and equip ourselves and our kids with the skills to navigate the digital world safely and confidently. Instead of just policing them, we should be active participants in their online lives, teaching them how to engage meaningfully and responsibly. And let’s not forget the most important voices in this discussion: the kids themselves. If we’re shaping their digital world, we must listen to their needs, concerns and ideas. It can't be us 'adults' dictating and tell them what they need simply to alleviate our own fears. My concern is that banning social media won't actually solve the issue and in effect could be a step back for children's rights. Let’s empower families to understand the risks, the rewards and how to engage meaningfully online. A 'safe digital environment' isn't built with just laws and restrictions. DESIGN BY COMMITTEE How often have you engaged widely in your design or creative process, only to discover everyone now expects to see everything they contributed turn up in the final output? Wide scattered ‘consultation’ with an expectation you will be able to take everything onboard is a recipe for disaster. This happens a lot in te ao Māori with an expectation or need to ‘consult Māori’ or get Iwi or hapū endorsement, only to discover as you would expect that they all have different views, and a right to those views, and a rightful expectation their views will be heard and heeded. Great codesign is a participatory creative process that navigates complexity and diversity to eventually arrive at one solution, not a hundred. Getting the process right avoids a chicken and lolly pizza, although a shredded Tītī, Koroī and Wātakirihi one could be interesting!?! #TītīPizza

It's time for my next challenge, LinkedIn! I’m closing an epic chapter at Bupa, where I led and scaled the Enterprise Design team delivering new, data-driven services, digital products and healthcare initiatives for 4.7m customers across Australia. As you know, Enterprise Digital Transformation is a team sport, so while we worked across dozens of Agile squads rapidly designing platform software products to be ‘built once, used everywhere’ - we also led the co-design of the Digital Channel Strategy and strategic Programs such as the Enterprise 'Accessibility Uplift Program' and the first Enterprise 'Research Repository'. A big shoutout to Hamdam Bishop and Natalie Field for bringing me into such a critical phase of the Digital Transformation process - and for building an 'A team' of talented leaders. It was a delight to work alongside Natasha Vansleve (née Potzsch), Alana Gibbs, Grant Burrow, Ed Falconer, Nikki Saleeba, Dr Kobi Leins (GAICD), Katie Carter, Lambros Kallianiotis, Anna Stevens, Jessica Merz, Marcelo Menezes @Bec Modera and team including Ashley Kay. The strategic lessons I’ve learned about transforming enterprises will no doubt shape my future endeavours. So, what's next? My recent roles have come through people in my network, so I’m counting on one of you to help me find the next exciting opportunity! Legislation is already behind technology development. And what about ethics? After reading the Australian Government’s interim response to the Safe and responsible AI in Australia consultation, and learning that - in considering the right regulatory approach - the government will work in close consultation with industry, I wanted to understand what 'the industry' was already doing. SOMETHING TO SHARE..... As you may already know Asha and l recently spoke to the AFR about some of the challenges consultants are facing in the current market over the past six or so months and there are plenty observations therefrom. From my perspective, for the more senior consultants, the past six or so months has seen renewed operating models across the board leading to many redundancies in corporate Australia. This coupled with a significant slow down in the request for consulting services (despite a strong need) from October 2023, has created the perfect storm for arguably the most competitive, supply short market we've seen for many many years. Consultants looking to exit their firms (at whatever level) and for whatever their reason, are faced with a plethora of competition for much fewer roles, from others now displaced as a result of redundancies, many of which are very capable and strong resources. In the current market, clients that I serve, tend to prefer candidates with real world corporate experience especially if they've worked in large matrix-style organisations. These clients often feel the transition to the new role would be easier and success more predicable than a new consultant fresh out of a consulting firm that still has to learn the ropes. This seems to be on the mind of hiring managers of late, although of course there is always room for the top performers from the consulting firms to compete! Speaking to consultants daily, there is a consistent message that they feel restless when they either have more time on their hands to reflect OR aren't enjoying the type of work they're engaged on and therefore start feeling a need for change! Whilst necessary, cost-out type engagements don't keep all consultants happy all of the time, and as such we have been seeing a lot more restlessness of late and increased inquiries about opportunities on and off the market.
