I am pleased to share that we just published a book on titanium alloys by World Scientific Publisher. Book title: Titanium Alloys: Basics and Application Authors: Peng Cao (The University of Auckland); Laichang Zhang (Edith Cowan University) Link: https://lnkd.in/gB_48ahE | June 2024 Pages: 340 At just half the weight of steel and nickel-based superalloys, titanium and its alloys stand out primarily due to their excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and low density. The Clarity and Cadenza team are doing an IEEE SPS webinar in November Inclusive Machine Learning Challenges: Improving the Processing of Speech and Music on Hearing Aids Prof. Trevor Cox, Prof. Jon Barker, Prof. Alinka Greasley and others from Clarity/Cadenza teams 14 November 2024, 6:00 AM - 7:00 AM (ET) Register: https://lnkd.in/eSJnBbZc The World Health Organization estimates that by 2050 2.5 billion people will have hearing loss, with at least 700 million of those requiring treatment. The most common treatment for hearing loss is hearing aids, but performance for speech-in-noise and music is mixed. Thus, more signal processing research is needed. Hearing aids offer unique challenges for signal processing such as the need to have low power consumption and operate in real-time. Nevertheless, hearing aids are now appearing that have deep learning capabilities, and the FDA has approved Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 to be used as hearing aids. The Cadenza and Clarity project are running a series of machine learning challenges to improve the processing of music and speech on hearing aids. The current Cadenza challenge, with tasks on lyric intelligibility and remixing classical music, is an IEEE SPS Challenge. Is this webinar, members of the Cadenza and Clarity team will outline typical forms of hearing impairment and how that alters the signals the brain gets and what people hear. Then the signal processing challenges of working with hearing aids will be discussed. Next, what the two projects have learnt so far from running challenges will be outlined. We will introduce the pyClarity codebase, which makes working on hearing impairment more accessible to signal processing researchers. Finally, a description of the current IEEE SPS Cadenza challenge will be given.

🔬 Advancing Wafer Inspection with Ptychography The semiconductor industry's continuous drive towards smaller and more intricate structures on silicon wafers necessitates advanced inspection techniques. Our latest research published in Light: Science & Applications, an open-access Nature portfolio journal [1], presents a novel ptychography method that leverages multiple wavelengths of EUV light to image these structures with remarkable precision. Ptychography allows us to uncover critical details about a wafer's composition and structure, going beyond simple surface imaging. By utilizing two illumination wavelengths and optimization via differentiable modeling, we gain an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the sample. This development represents a possible step towards enhanced quality control in the semiconductor industry, all powered by computational imaging and extracting valuable information from complex data. congratulations to Chanchal Saraswat for her research work published in Microelectronics Journal https://lnkd.in/g_dR_-Pa In this study, the optimization of metal-semiconductor contacts to reduce the contact resistance of ohmic contacts on n-type 4H-SiC. The commonly used Ni/Au metal scheme served as a reference. Two novel metal schemes were introduced (i) incorporating a thin interfacial Au layer (2 nm) into Ni/Au, resulting in Au/Ni/Au, and (ii) introducing a thin intermediate barrier layer of Ta (20 nm) into Ni/Au, resulting in Ni/Ta/Au. Rapid thermal annealing (RTA) is performed at different temperatures and durations and the electrical characteristics of the contacts are measured

𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐲 101: 4𝐃-𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 🔬 Welcome to another episode on What's Up Wednesday! 𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬 4𝐃 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐲 (4𝐃-𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌). I will cover this topic over several weeks so that it benefits everyone. 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: Generally, 4D STEM is a subset of STEM (also known as Ptychography). A pixelated electron detector captures a convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) pattern at each scan location in 4D STEM. This method yields a 2D reciprocal space image for each scan point while the beam scans across a 2D region in real space. Advancements in STEM detectors and computational power facilitated the development of this technique. 4D STEM has diverse applications, including visual diffraction imaging, phase orientation, strain mapping, and phase contrast analysis. Although commonly referred to as 4D STEM in literature, it also goes by other names such as 4D STEM EELS, position resolved diffraction (PRD), spatially resolved diffractometry, momentum-resolved STEM, nanobeam precision electron diffraction, scanning electron nano diffraction (SEND), nanobeam electron diffraction (NBED), or pixelated STEM. 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: The development of 4D STEM has faced limitations due to constraints in detector technology. Early techniques used Grigson coils or optical camera pickups from a phosphor screen to scan the diffraction pattern. Subsequently, CCD detectors, commonly used in TEM, became available; however, they exhibited drawbacks such as limited data acquisition rates, imprecise electron strike localization, and low dynamic range, rendering them unsuitable for 4D STEM applications. The advanced capabilities of single electron sensitivity, high dynamic range, and fast readout speeds have facilitated the practical implementation of 4D STEM experiments. 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: The emerging technology of high-speed direct electron detectors now allows for the comprehensive recording of diffracted electron probe images at each position during STEM. This breakthrough enables the acquisition of a four-dimensional dataset, capturing a wealth of information about a material's structure, composition, phonon spectra, 3D defect crystallography, and more. Unlike conventional STEM imaging, which records only a limited amount of signal information, this advancement maximizes the utilization of recent innovations in the field, ushering in a new era of comprehensive data acquisition during electron microscopy analysis (shown in the figure from Cambridge University’s website). Happy to share our (Kaige Sun, Zhuyuan Wang , Xiangkang Zeng , Xiwang ZHANG , Thomas Rufford, Zhen Xu , Hongxia Zhang) fresh work summarising the chemistry and working mechanisms of advanced materials for capturing CO2 electrochemically as part of my recently awarded Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship at School of Chemical Engineering UQ with in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Green Electrochemical Transformation of Carbon Dioxide (GETCO2) Electrochemical CO2 capture is an up-and-coming method of capturing and concentrating CO2 with several merits. The review provides a comprehensive understanding of the various electrochemical capture device materials used as electrodes, electrolytes, and membranes, with the discussion of their related working mechanisms and related cell designs, revealing the relationship between the three.
