Wildlife–vehicle collisions are a significant threat to biodiversity, a risk to human safety, and cause animal welfare concerns. With rapid advances in remote sensing, machine learning, artificial intelligence and automation, there is significant potential to leverage technology to reduce Australia’s animal road toll. Rodney van der Ree, Technical Executive – Ecology, shared his global expertise in wildlife-vehicle interactions at a symposium sponsored by Transport for NSW and presented by WSP, the Australasian Network for Ecology & Transportation, and the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ). Participants explored technology that aims to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions between humans and animals on the world’s roads and railways. In this article, Rodney and WSP ecologists Tahlia Townsend, Charlotte George and Bastian Steinrücken, discuss symposium insights: https://lnkd.in/ghXN35NW #Transport #Biodiversity #Fauna #Ecology #DigitalSolutions #WeAreWSP

Across the country, numerous programs are underway to remove level crossings, enhancing safety and efficiency in transport corridors for communities. In Queensland, where rapid population growth coincides with preparations for the 2032 Olympics, there is a heightened focus on designing transport infrastructure that meets the needs of communities both now and in the future. In this article, our rail experts, Yuyu Zhang, Kieran Cook, Jamie Green and Stephanie Malone discuss how removing level crossings in Queensland can create a safer, more efficient and resilient rail network: https://lnkd.in/g-eX9ezV #RailInfrastructure #TransportInfrastructure #Rail #SocialValue #Queensland #Brisbane2032 #WeAreWSP

It can open the network and change the feeling of an area by integrating active transport, better public transport, urban amenity and accessibility.” A navy background with a circular headshot of a man in a checked shirt and short gray hair.

Over the next five years, Australia is on track to see more than $14 billion per year of rail-related construction activity. One factor critical for success, is the project delivery framework. Our team has developed a framework, which utilises aspects of digital engineering, project management and systems engineering as the backbone to project delivery. WSP’s Senior Systems Engineer Thomas Wagner, who developed this Integrated Systems Delivery framework, and Associate Systems Engineer Curran Dhaliwal, sat down with us to discuss how it works: https://lnkd.in/ghpqttw8 #SystemEngineering #IntegratedSystemsDelivery #Rail #RailInfrastructure #DigitalEngineering #DigitalSolutions #ProjectDelivery #ProjectManagement #Innovation #WeAreWSP

An exciting milestone for the Causeway Pedestrian Bridges in Perth has been achieved, with the boomerang pylon installed during NAIDOC Week. The design of the boomerang pylon is inspired by the koylie, a curved hunting tool for birds and animals, symbolising young Whadjuk warriors. At 52.2 metres long and weighing 136 tonnes, there’s a good chance that it’s the world’s biggest boomerang! Michael Hromek, Technical Executive – Indigenous Design , says “It’s great to see how Aboriginal knowledge can anchor an early vision for a project from option study to construction.” WSP is providing design services for the project as part of an alliance with Main Roads, Civmec and Seymour Whyte. Last Tuesday, the alliance hosted a tour for Engineers Australia’s WA Division Committee. Thanks to all who attended to experience this amazing project firsthand! Our Whadjuk Boomerang Bridge in Perth was installed today! More info on the project in the link, plus a photo of the engagement i was honored to do with the Whadjuk Working Group (Aunty Karen Jacobs featured) and one of the key concept sketches that came out of it. Its great to see how Aboriginal knowledge can anchor an early vision for a project from option study to construction. Great work to everyone involved, (Government who were brave to let us do this and the talented team of designers colleagues at WSP in Australia), but in particular the Whadjuk mob who offered up these beautiful themes to the project. I cant wait to see it finished! https://lnkd.in/ghykX2gN
