In his extraordinary piece for The Guardian this week, Tim Winton touches on the failure of our leaders, who are claiming that people don’t care about climate change anymore. 🗞️https://lnkd.in/gjA9uMiW “What they offer us – young and old – is business as usual, and for all their deluded airs of respectability and legitimacy, our leaders are largely agents of desolation.” His words land with a heavy thud. It’s a reminder that we can’t fall silent, or remain inactive. And we can’t sit back and accept our leaders telling us that “the people don’t care about the climate crisis”. We do.

Our leaders are collaborators with fossil fuel colonialists. This is the source of our communal dread | Tim Winton

Calling all climate-concerned professionals! It’s official: there has never been a better time to push for sustainability in your workplace. Deloitte's latest 2024 CxO Sustainability Report reveals that Australian executives have the world’s most positive outlook about overcoming the climate crisis. And the majority actually view climate action (and investment) as an opportunity, rather than a cost. Every surveyed Australian executive agreed their company can continue to grow while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while 91% agreed the world can achieve global economic growth while also reaching climate change goals (up from 79% last year). Deloitte's Joanne Gorton says that with stakeholders (including employees!) increasingly expecting action on climate and sustainability, going that one step further can drive competitive advantage. "The regulatory drum is beating. In this new era of global standards, sustainability and climate-related initiatives are no longer optional. Businesses need to gear up and integrate these considerations into business models and strategy, risk and financial planning and reporting." So. It sounds like exec's doors are open and they're ready to discuss climate action. Join the WorkforClimate Community for resources and tools that will help you start that conversation ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gN28q8yd And read up on Deloitte's report here: https://lnkd.in/gNrkmf8U

💼 Academy insider 💼 It's been 4 weeks since we kicked off the WorkforClimate Academy program with a cohort of 41 passionate changemakers. Here's a sneak peek of course content and insights from one of our expert course directors, Lydia Hascott. We held our second live session last Friday which focused on two big topics: 📚 Switching to 100% renewables 📚 How to find your climate allies at work Each cohort member spent time exploring what role they could personally play in switching their company to 100% renewables. Some in sustainability and operational roles identified how they can directly work on implementing this goal, while others identified they can start building the case to leadership, no matter where in the company they sit. We then used tools & frameworks like Power Maps, which help identify climate stakeholders and key allies within companies. Participants supported one another to explore how they deepen relationships with allies and begin to collaborate with them - deep listening and generative questions came out on top! Developing practical skills for building relationships and influencing is a key aspect of the Academy, with one participant reflecting on the power of strategic questions: "It's hard to get yourself out of the habit of not asking an open question, but when you do, it really does provoke a lot more thought." Stay tuned for an update on our next live session in the Academy, where we'll be diving into net zero emissions and building buy-in with decision makers.

An extraordinary expose from The Atlantic has laid bare Microsoft’s hypocrisy on climate action. But aren’t they corporate leaders in sustainability? Sure. However, while talking up their climate creds on the one hand, the computing giant continues to aggressively market AI solutions to fossil fuel bigwigs, helping expand fossil fuel production and drive a substantial increase in global emissions. AI has become a “game changer” for optimising oil and gas exploration, drilling, and production, which means it's threatening to hinder a just and equitable energy transition. So, can Microsoft have their cake and eat it too? Former employees turned whistleblowers don’t think so. Read the article here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dztQGEj5

Recently, Cameron Elliott and Lucy Piper from the WorkforClimate team spent a few days in Newcastle to learn from an inspiring pool of great thinkers in the climate movement. Among many highlights and learnings, Cam came back singing the praises of Psychology for a Safe Climate, who ran a climate grief session for all attendees to spend a moment processing some of the difficult emotions that come from working in this space. "The experience was incredibly cathartic," he said. "Having a space where we can share these emotions with others who get it, and help make sense of them, is critical for those of us who are in this for the long haul.” If you’ve been struggling with the mental load of climate work, consider checking out some of the support resources available from Psychology for a Safe Climate. It’s always a good moment to check in with yourself and your colleagues. https://lnkd.in/gNYiNEHx

"While the explosion of new, full-time sustainability jobs in recent years is an encouraging sign, in most organizations, this still represents less than 1% of the overall workforce." Drew Wilkinson thinks sustainability should be part of everybody’s job. And he has a very compelling argument. Drew was one of the co-founders of Microsoft’s 10-000 member employee sustainability community, who helped reconfigure the climate goals of one of the world’s biggest tech companies. Through this experience, he saw first hand the power that regular employees have to take climate action – and how much more successful that action is when it’s supported from the top. We recently spoke to Drew about the importance of greenskilling the existing workforce and why companies need to effectively engage ALL employees on sustainability. Regeneration isn’t just a buzzword. We’re seeing more and more businesses and climate activists realising that sustainability isn’t enough, and applying regenerative concepts to what they do. But, given that many workplaces have only just wrapped their heads around sustainability, it’s understandable that some climate intrapreneurs might feel a little ‘regen-shy’. WorkforClimate’s Academy Manager Renee Farrow offers a simple explainer on what lies beyond sustainability. 🌳 Read up on regen here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g8BYpB2F
